Got a call from a friend today.

Little league majors. He had the plate. R1, no outs. Flyball to deep LF. R1 doesn't think it's going to be caught, touches and passes 2nd when the ball is caught. Returning to 1st, R1 misses 2nd on his way back. He beats a throw back into 1st. U2 calls time, and with no appeal, calls R1 out for missing 2nd

I told him I've never heard of such a thing. I said F3 could tag the runner while standing on 1st and say "he missed 2nd" and that would be an appeal and an out. Otherwise without a proper appeal I don't see any rule that allows the umpire to just call the runner out. Am I missing something here???

I think I remember reading that this used to be the case for a missed base in FED??

New one on me, but being LL.... Who knows? I bet Ives does.

It was. You used to be able to call runners for leaving early or missing a base. Thankfully that is no longer the case! However I /think this is correct in LL.

Not correct for LL. LL is very close to OBR with some safety modifications and a few modifications for the teaching aspect. This would be an appeal.

It was only correct in FED.

OBR (and LL, PONY, Dixie, USSSA, Riplen, etc.) and NCAA always have required an appeal.

Thanks guys. Just wanted to make sure before I tell my friend to bring it up to the UIC.

Since when can you call an out on this without a verbal appeal in FED? Can someone cite the rule?

CS the Fed rule hasn't been on the books for st least 6 or 7 years. It used to be that is the umpire saw a runner leave early or flat miss a base then he is to call the runner out. It was a horrible rule and thankfully went the way of the dodo a long time ago.

Oh OK...I thought the post was saying that it was still a rule. I didn't think it was.

All the LL and above here play by FED rules with a few modifications for roster batting and safety. It makes it real easy to go from high school to summer ball without having to remember the rule differences between FED and OBR

Chartered LL does NOT use FED. They use OBR with their modificatoins.

You're not up to speed. He meant LL age and above.

I remember having to make those missed base calls and I hated it. It made me feel like a snitch. Also, be careful when you use LL generically. The Little League police will be quick to correct you. I like to use "Youth ball" for any sub-shaving age baseball, and only use the "L" words for the Original/The Best :fuel:

Maybe - but that's not what he said.

But you knew what he meant. At least that's what you always tell me.

Not really. Where I live all (most?) of the above 12 is FED but all the 12U is LL or leagues that use LL based OBR. Unless something has changed recently Legion uses FED because the local association won't call 13+ games to OBR.

When I say it it's when someone says mixes up interference and obstruction.

Legion is still modified OBR, although it is not surprising that some districts have ignored that and gone FED (ours was one of them until the state director put an end to it this year, usually the coaches would vote in FED changes, but the state just said no dice this year).
