I am really seriously considering purchasing one of these new All Star chest protectors. My only concern is the fit around the neck.

I wear a 17 1/2 to 18 dress shirt and have read some concerns about neck room. I was just wanting to get input from guys that have worn the CP.

Thanks.

Like you I have a thick neck! 18 -18 1/2.

My first CP was an old +POS ribbed CP. When I first got it, it squeezed the sides of my neck terribly and was incredibly uncomfortable. What I did was put a basketball in the neck slot & secured it with bungee cord and left it in the garage for a couple of days. By my next game it was fine. I bet something like this would work well with a hard shell too.

Many people don't realize that even your hard sells have significant flexibility and mold to your form.

I intend on getting a first-hand look at the All-Star CP soon and will report back.

The first suggestion I ever got from your forum was the use of this very technique!

I bought a Gold, and couldn't get it comfortably around my 17.5-inch neck. Like you suggested, I stuffed a basketball---in my case a girls' basketball---between the clavicle plates, and after a couple days, voila ... it fits!

I have been beholden to you ever since, Warren.

May I ask why you took a basketball from a girl and not a boy? Did she cry??? Are you going to give it back?

It's smaller. I'm only a 17.5.

My daughter was one of those gals who played basketball in high school just to have something else to put on her college resume. That is, until she realized there was a lot of running involved. :shakehead:

You should be fine, I'm pretty close to that neck size. The problem I had was the plastic rubbing up against my neck, but I moved up the small detachable pad and that solved the problem. Also, I think they've made a few modifications from when they first came out with it based on some of the recent photos I've seen of it compared to mine. It's a snug fit and you might need to adjust it a little bit, but you want it to fit tight to maximize the protection.

I wear a 17 inch shirt and I have not had an issue. It fits snug but it has not chaffed me in any way.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all of the input and the suggestions for stretching.

The All Star will definitely be my birthday present to myself in January.

Thanks again.

I used my new All Star CP last week for about an hour a day for three days. I was getting some rub on the right side of my neck.

Other than that, the CP is very comfortable. Needless to say, I'm a bit worried about a neck rash after a 2 hour plate...then having to explain the rash on my neck to my wife. Yikes!

Remember, ...you can loosen the straps of the harness so you're not so tight in the neck. I actually did this so the CP woudln't ride up TOO high. Even loosened, it sits up nice and high for great protection, but much more comfy now

I think starting with a slightly deflated girls basketball or size 5 soccer ball then positioning it in the CP then inflating might prevent from over molding and getting a loose fit. You could increase the inflation of the ball if necessary.

Wait, what? You loosened it to keep it from riding up? I wore it for two games a couple of weeks ago and it kept riding up. In between games, I tightened it, but that didn't seem to help much.

So I should loosen it?

Yes, I loosend it because it was so hight and tight. By loosening it, ...it sits nice and high, but not TOO hight .......give it a whirl!!

I will. I've got games this weekend, so I'll try it then.

well iam now the owner of an allstar CP . was trying on around the house , with the wife laughing at me mocking me . anyway back to the issue , i can now relate to the "riding too high" comments !!! wow i look like herman munster (football shoulder pads) compared to how my douglas 15" and champion p200 fit . and the neck opening is snug for sure . i almost have the the harness straps all the way to there ends , not much more loosening i can do ??? any other suugestions from those who already wear this CP , would be appreciated . my first reactions are that this CP might not fit to my body type  ? i like the rest of the design though .

I can tell you that it has to break in. Just like any other CP.

I had an umpire clinic this weekend and got to try out this CP. I like everything except the two pads on the side. They keep going forward underneath my shirt. Has anyone else had this issue, or even removed them. On the photos you will see them on the front photo and they looked removed on the back photo

Yeah, dump them. That was the first thing I did when I got mine. Luckily, they just "velcro off" so it's really easy.

By the way, I've worn mine for eight games now. This past weekend it really seemed to start "fitting" much better. I've loosened the shoulder straps and it's not riding up near as much. As far as the neck chafing, I've raised the little "pillow" pad by the throat and when I put it on, I make sure to pull all the cloth up around the neck opening. This seems to help, as now there's something between my neck and the plastic plates.

Yes, I have the same issue. It's more of an annoyance than anything. I'm considering cutting them off.

Yours aren't attached with velcro? Mine just came right out...

Mine came right off too. They are just velcroed on. I gotta try moving that little pad. I had my first game of the year yesterday and it rubbed a mark on my neck that's still there
