I've forgotten which recent thread mentioned a pregame with a partner who either forgot or ignored the discussion, but it got me to thinking what you guys pregame. I work with the same partner A LOT, so we're on the same page and don't really do a lot of pregame other than bringing up the fact that maybe we have a tough lefty today, or these two teams almost brawled last game, etc. A typical pre-game for me with a new/unfamiliar partner would be: signals who's got the bases on the infield Uncaught 3rd strike mechanic check swing appeals who has tags in different situation this year's points of emphasis INT/OBS mechanics Ground rules (if either of us is familiar with the park), such as snow/temp fences, trees, etc. foul ball off batter who has responsibility for DBT plays GLM signal What else do you pre-game? I looked through past threads for this and couldn't find anything as specific as the question of what SPECIFICALLY you pre-game, although I skimmed the topic titles, not the threads themselves.

By rule, OBS awards one base beyond. Sounds like it should have been R2 and R3. I had an OBS call yesterday. R1 stealing. Throw goes into CF and R1 and F6 get into a dancing match with each other. BR had not acquired 1st. R1 had yet to acquire 2d (but that's irrelevant).

First scrimmage of the year tonight. Cold, but dressed for it. Ugly, ugly ball. Two lower-tier varsity teams, but hey, at least I'm on the field, right? R1, 2 out. Uncaught 3rd strike. Poor throw to 1st, low and in the base path, F3 muffs it, doesn't look for ball but tries an arm tackle on BR (of the non-MC, bonehead move variety). I signal and call "INT... OBSTRUCTION!" (hey, it's my first game, gimme a break). No play is made on anyone, everyone is safe, resulting in R1 R3. My question, finally. At relaxed action, do you call time and make known that you called OBS, or do you let it be? Being a scrimmage, I let the DC know what I had, but in a regular season game, I'm heading to B and returning my partner's rotation signal.

There is no doubt in my mind, if you touch base with Dale Ford over in Jonesborough or Supervisor Chuck Meriwether in your home town of Nashville, unless he has moved in the last year or two since his retirement, could provide guidance on just what the MLBU are told to look for. He could also tell you IMHO what he was told to look for in MiLB, if there is a difference in MLB/MiLB, and if anything has changed over the years. This does not mean MLB has the same interpretation or guidance that other organizations and levels of play use for their games, and it doesn't mean one level is more hoity toity than another organization or level in their interpretation. Best thing to do for anyone, is to listen to the senior umpires in their organization and call a play like this one the way the senior guys feel it should be called based on their knowledge of the rules and interpretations. These type of situations could change base on the organization or level. Just think of other differences between the levels. There was no crashing the catcher rule and penalties in MLB prior to this year, but NCAA and FED had the rule and how they want it applied which may be different. Also, even if everyone was one the same page for this play in the OP, someday there would come an example of a catch/no catch where we would disagree. Crap happens. Now, wait till we all have to figure out where the IR crew should place the runners on more and more plays like this one and others. Would tons of fun who runs the 100 in 17 flat have made it to 3rd in time. How about tub of goo who runs the 100 in 14 flat. Would he have made it. Of course the rabbit who runs a 9.5 100 would make it, but you can see my point. Although we would all love to have every single play and call be black and white, it just ain't gonna happen. I met Chuck Meriwether at a one day clinic in Boston last fall. Nicest guy you'd ever want to meet! We got to talking and he still lives in Nashville. FWIW....

Had the exact same thing happen to me last year (sans the crash). Thought about what I could have done differently. Came to the conclusion it wouldn't happen again for a very long time. "Very long time" was exactly 6 outs later. Took two steps in to let F3 pass and grabbed the line. Worked like a charm. Just be careful of the BR, who may be running hard if the ball is close to the line.

That's not a catch. I'm siding with the replay officials. A player must maintain control throughout the process of releasing it from the glove. I'm not sure if there is any definitive declaration form the various publications that there is a difference between a middle infielder dropping a ball through transfer and this type of play, but I have always been of the opinion there is a difference.

For a guy that likes doing 16 games in 3 days, you must be close to dead. A couple Vicodin will help. And a beer. Here's to a quick return!

5-1-2a1 clearly makes the above ruling for FED incorrect. Anyone have a later version of the BRD to see if this FED ruling is still there? It's Section 273 in the 2011 BRD The 2012 BRD has the same case play, except it's section 274. However, in this example the play is being made on R1, was unsuccessful and, consequently, the play would stand. In your test question the initial attempt was on R2, then on R1. I don't see how any of the answers are correct.

If BU is in A and gets hits by a line drive (as it says in the OP), how is it play on? If it's not umpire interference, play on. If foul and dead, "play on" wouldn't be for long. Seems to me the implication is that if an umpire gets hit in A, it's probably foul

I bought it two years ago. I don't remember what I paid for it, but it would have been worth it if I paid 3x what I did.
