Was he a coach hired outside the auspices of the school system, or was he a teacher who also happened to coach. Obviously no big deal if he is in an area where coaches are not necessarily tied to the school system. If he was with the school system, did he just loose his coaching job (probably an extra stipend for coaching) or did he also lose his teaching job to go along with losing his coaching job. Who wants a teacher on staff either who is basically teaching this sort of behavior to our children. Cripes for that matter who wants any adult, businessman or whatever teaching that??? Probably how they do things at their real job and also how they treat people. Probably just a great humanitarian to work for, not. Just asking. A good question, I don't know if he stayed at his regular job, or if he was a teacher. I just know he was gone from coaching quick.

First, that was a horribly written article. He claims baseball is slow and clumsy, he should try reading his article, had to walk away from it three times. NBA is an unwatchable sport, a bunch of tall whiners slamming the ball, walking all over and shooting threes. Defense, WTH is that in the NBA? College basketball is much more enjoyable to watch but even that is waning. College football is fun to watch, but the whole ranking system is so arbitrary it is irrelevant. I really enjoy the NFL but it is apples and oranges to baseball. 162 games compared to 18. College baseball and softball is much more enjoyable to watch. Then you want to try and compare fantasy football and fantasy baseball? You have to invest a couple of hours to NFL, baseball is everyday, it is a huge investment of time. Quoting Bob Costas on anything shows he has no clue.

As I said earlier, toss him and let him explain to his AD what kind of a moron he is. We had a JV coach about ten years ago that got fired for pulling stupid stunts.

No way in hell I am restricting a coach for such a stupid and unsporting act. If it was a player, maybe he stays. An adult using that fact to get a kid to throw him the ball so he can score a run is an auto eject.

I started as a teenager and the best thing I found to do is to be able to explain your calls without being intimidated. This is easier said than done but the important thing is to give them a strong knowledge of mechanics and rules. Unfortunately I never got that knowledge and had to fly by the seat of my pants. There was no internet, I got no training, no rulebook and a league of managers that were little Earl Weavers. Game management is not something that can be taught, it depends on knowledge, personality, physical carriage of the umpire and how the league backs the umpires. What works for one umpire is completely wrong for another. You can teach what never works, to not be a doormat and to not to walk away from ejections. Also, don't go looking for ejections but they need to understand it is a necessary evil.

Thank God! The best news of the season bar none. Maybe the better news is that He-Who-Shall-Not-Be-Named announced his retirement and that Scully will be around next year. Very true and very good points. I do not have a favorable opinion of him (I know he is crying on the inside after reading this). I just do not trust him. IMO he talks out of both sides of his mouth about umpiring and instant replay. I also feel that he has stood a firm ground on issues like Pete Rose, but not so much on other issues (A-Rod comes to mind most recently. He has the power to not allow him to play through his appeal) But he did have some strengths and I believe the sport is better off now than when he came in.It will be interesting to see who will be next. Not so much talking out of both sides of his mouth. He is there to represent all of MLB. And I'm not so sure he has the power to not allow ARod to play during the appeal process. If I was ARod I would fight also. It didn't seem to bother MLB when he was the top dog, and now they are using him as a scapegoat. Remember, if you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin'. He had the power to speed the process along. I understand allowing them to play on a three game suspension but when it is that many games, just start it.

I will have to admit defeat on this ruling. I still disagree that 7.06b is the way to to go but I'm not a crew chief in MLB. I still think 9.01c is the way to go but the end result was bringing him back out to finish his award was not the thing to do.

If they used 7.06 then they are stretching it beyond the scope of the rule, translate that to mean wrong. I also said to invoke 9.01c as a method to award home in light of the mess that occurred. I also agree with ricka that using 9.01c is for weenies, in most cases. However, it is there for a purpose, to be used for that once or twice in a career when something genuinely comes up that is not covered. I believe this fits better than 7.06. As stated earlier in the thread, he could have easily gone around the catcher, he chose not to do so.

i'm not sure you watched the play... do you think Gomez was gonna go around.. nope.. this is typical trashing talking at it's finest... There was no way Gomez was doing a-n-y-t-h-i-n-g except stick his nose in the catcher's face.

You can't get obstruction but I do believe they used 9.01c to keep things under control. Technically the Braves would have a case for an appeal but that would be rewarding them for their catcher jumping in the runner's face. It was a stupid play on both sides of the ball so the umpires decided to take the point of least resistance. Not exactly according to Hoyle but effective.
