I'm in the un-tucked camp. I can't stand a tucked in jacket, especially, how shall I say this diplomatically, on more rotund umpires.

Regardless, I don't want to look like this:

Tucked jackets always remind me of the Bee-Gees look, too. That short jacket look, I mean it was fine in the 70's, I guess!

I personally think this can be fine untucked but it all comes down to fit and finish...

Lest this thread be filled with more sartorial crimes of humanity...

Order this or something like it: https://purchaseofficials.com/collections/belts/products/ultimate-belt

Cut it to the appropriate length where it will wrap somewhere between your pants belt and the top of the back pockets without excess length beyond the fastening section. Before putting your non-drawstring or -elastic jacket on, put the flex belt around that area of your pants. Put the jacket on, tuck the end under the flex belt, and adjust for a straight, smooth line at the bottom of the jacket.

Agree. It’s more the excessive length in this example rather than a tuck or untuck.

Those pants on the left fit a little like my Smitty Tapered base pants.

The excessive length is because the maker (rhymes with “pity”) oversizes all their shirts and jackets so as to accommodate Plate. Not only in length, but also in shoulder volume.

There were jackets offered in two different hems of the same style – gathered-hem (ie. elastic, drawstring, etc) or loose-hem. Of course, the loose-hem version would be more “ideal” for tucking in alá working the Plate. But then, it looked sloppy as hell, untucked on the Bases (and it does!). So you would opt for a gathered-hem jacket. But then, you might have to use it on Plate, and if you’re (still) using a 1-1/4” thick couch-cushion CP, worn loose (because you wore out the strap-n-yoke elasticity long ago) you’ll have to get a larger sized jacket. Sooooooo… two jackets? :HS

Pfffft! Not happening! Not when they cost $50-$65 (then), or $80-$100 (now)! One jacket! That’s it! (And this why the “old boys” cling to their XXL navy jackets with red shoulder stripes).

So, I have several authentic Majestic jackets, size L. The ThermaBase and the Squall jacket are both worn untucked, but both of them have a gathered hem. The Convertible is tucked, every time. I now have a Davis Convertible and Softshell, in size L, and I’ve been persuaded (as they were delivered) and convinced (after wearing them) that they fit and function  perfectly fine untucked.

I can’t say the same about my… Smmmmittttty Convertible. I’ve gone through three of them, and not only has the fabric quality gotten worse, but so has the sizing! So I started with Large, and now the latest one is a Medium… which I still… out of habit… wear tucked in. 🫣

This. Heavy winter long sleeve shirt with whatever advanced winter layering under your CP. Or Plate Coat with the same. I have seen an MLB ump with what looked and fitted like a shirt but the fabric looked more like a jacket fabric. I would buy one if I knew what it was.

That's allowed in South Texas where you wouldn't buy a long sleeve to use once in February but need warmth occasionally. It's also allowed for skin cancer challenged umps but the fashion question is what color the undershirt should be. But to segue, why do short umps think 1 ball bag makes them look taller?

This is another one where I get it, but I also think it's all dependent on the context. A lot of what @jimurrayalterego covered.

  • Skin conditions/considerations
  • Climate considerations
  • Is it padded/protective

What that being said, I'm pretty much in hardcore agreement on #NoJacketsOnPlate.

personally the old look of the blazer styled jacket for plate and bases with the button down shirt or the turtleneck as needed, looked the best when i saw them on tv.

...and the AL umpires of 70's really classed up the joint with the burgundy coats.

I’m also a fan of long sleeves on the plate, no jacket, but I do make one exception. If it’s raining, sometimes I’ll go with the jacket to keep all of it off me, as a long sleeve shirt is going to get wet, stay wet, and start soaking through other layers.

Which should compel you to decisively call an end to it, and GTFOTF.

Of all the outdoor sports I’ve ever participated in, I’d rather juggle chainsaws in the rain than participate in a baseball game in the rain. Pure misery. No need for it.

go max go--love the GTFOTF. just suspend and decide rules you want to use. if you GTFOTF after 1 pitch, just make the rules such as you play a nine and then a 7 on the 2nd game if that original game cannot be completed. or if you get to 6, or 7 or whatever you want the rule to be, you come back with finishing the original 9 then do a 7 or 9 after that, or just make that game that got to 4, now just a 7 inning if you come back the next day followed by a 7 again.  it works the same for both teams. just make a dang suspension rule. tweak it the next year if you want. just make a rule. do what you want, but GTFOTF to start with. may not make sense above as i am intellectually challenged but you get the drift.

Yeah, but more thinking turf game where it’s annoying rain (or on/off) but not cancel worthy.
