CCS left out an important part of 5.02(a) "(a) The catcher shall station himself directly back of the plate. He may leave his position at any time to catch a pitch or make a play except that when the batter is being given an intentional base on balls, the catcher must stand with both feet within the lines of the catcher’s box until the ball leaves the pitcher’s hand. PENALTY: Balk." The balk for leaving the box during an IBB was rarely called back when pitches were thrown and MLB umpires were instructed to let the catcher leave the box at first motion. The catcher was also not guilty of CI by stepping on or in front of HP during a steal or squeeze. He stepped to the side as in a pitchout which is legal. "He may leave his position at any time........except........intentional base on balls."

I think MLB and NCAA do not want any part of the fielder in front of the base. NFHS allows part of the fielder in front of the base. I'm not sure you were aware of that difference.

Unless my reading comprehension has fallen favor to my dememtia, MLB and NCAA now do not want a fielder's body part to be in front of the base. NFHS allows it. Your disdain for NFHS is warranted to some degree but RTFM.

I think MLB ABS is in the middle also. CCS has some posts showing a strike overturned to ball on ABS where the ump doesn't get a missed call because the pitch was a strike at the front of the plate.

So the big money ADs will change the strike zone on ABS to 19". I suspect this will not be in the final edit. But it is an example of ....................

I don't think they are referencing Trackman. There might be some new Electronic Strike Zone system. It seems the Rules Committee wants a 19" wide zone where if any part of the ball intersects it will be a strike. Last I remember most NCAA baseball rules committees were composed of ADs and coaches.

ABS strike zone is 19". They want you to call the black bevel which is not visible? Reminds me of a high school coach who had his ground crew paint the bevel white and leave it showing.

That becomes a problem when you learn 3-4 man. PU and U1, U2, U3 is intuitive. U1 at HP and U2 at 1B is not.

Was Livensparger overthinking the MLBUM interp regarding first touch? Most or all of that ball was over the foul line when it hit. Back when the interp first came out and had our heads spinning most of the consensus was for a close call the umpire should always call fair and let replay do the geometry. This one didn't even seem close.

What do you mean by "No"? The first question in the OP was whether the removed Defensive Player could legally sub for his DH while his Defensive sub was in the game. The answer is no. Once our OP posted what the rule would allow I followed with he could replace the Defensive sub with his starter Defensive player in the 10 spot and then cross out the 10 spot to put him in the DH's slot.

No, he is inferior because he takes his rig off with his right hand😀. But he did have a brain fart and threw a new ball to the mound while F3 had the live one on fair territory and then waved off the run that scored. The timing of that wave off shouldn't have affected Toronto as they were almost off the infield. The lack of a point to HP might be argued. Also might be argued is thinking an MLB manager should be well versed in the intricacies of time plays and had plenty of time from the out at 1B to his fielders going off to appeal a fourth out. Mistakes all around that play.

There is no protest in OBR although some leagues using OBR might have added it. I don't know of any OBR guidance other than what we see is allowed as pitchers take the rubber. Basically it would be you know it when you see it. This pitcher was correctly called for a balk. He also had a "start stop" step with his free foot as he got comfortable that we wouldn't call even though he was touching his plate. But you have segued to a more nuanced issue than the OP which clearly had a pitcher near the rubber and not attempting yet to get comfortable.

For FED you have to be aware of some caseplay wording but I'll just quote this from the BRD: "IN FED, PITCHING RESTRICTIONS BEGIN WHEN THE PITCHER INTENTIONALLY CONTACTS THE PITCHER"S PLATE. POE 1987, 1988, 1989, 1997, 1998, 2008, 2009." For all codes, think about when you would point the ball live. That would be when the pitcher is engaged.

I think he just got a generic pic from the net and is only trying to show the position of F1 in relation to the rubber. But why do you assume a LL mound?

I pulled up about 20 MLB videos of R1 with out at 2B. A little more than half had U2 outside. The distance from the grass varied some. Based on positioning I would say they all would be subject to UI but with more time to react. It looks like they don't go out on fly balls as that would have crews to have two sets of mechanics.

Other 60' orgs seem to keep the BU inside. 2man BUs do shade their B further back. I thought softball and LL have them outside for watching leaving the base.

Sounds to me as if he works with baseball umpires who do not or cannot put the effort into understanding the rule.

There is an esoteric scenario regarding the doctoring the ball penalty where you can find the word "choice". Otherwise there is no choice in the OBR/NCAA balk rule. There are guys who dress as umpires who find it hard to understand what you understand correctly and revert to using "coach choice."

I think LL has U2 outside for different reasons than MLB umps who choose outside and that location is closer. I'm not sure of those reasons.

I've never seen an artificial turf field with bad lines anywhere.

If I'm the PU I wipe out inside, front or back if they are not right.
