… Sorry… I got spoiled in my 10 years in Arizona. 🌵

In Seattle we’d have to cancel baseball entirely (hmm, given frustration of the M’a that may not be a bad idea…)

love the GTFOTF. just suspend and decide rules you want to use.

dd, just because I want to GTFOTF doesn't mean that I'm going to haul off and make my own rules. In (nearly) every game I've worked, I've operated either within the framework of a system with protocols (and decision-making) in place, or, barring that, the latitude reflective of the context.

For the former (which is the majority of the time), there's someone at a "higher pay grade" that calls the shots regarding weather, whether (ha!) that be a League administrator, Conference coordinator, Tournament Director, Event Host, or whoever else "in charge". If rain is even pending, I've got the person tapped with making that determination already identified, appraised, and in the loop. Even if they take my insight on when to pull the plug (usually when either the pitcher or batter loses grip or good visibility), they're the one ultimately pulling the plug, and they've already embarked on what to do to resolve it, whether that be suspension, postponement, cancellation, or ending it. Sure, I might have to wait around for 30 minutes to 3 hours, but that's the nature of the beast.

For the latter, in those rare occasions where I have all the responsibility, I still consult my partner (if I've got one), and take his insights, and I consult the coaches as to what they want to do. We have to remember – this isn't professional baseball. The rain will come and go, the sun will set and then rise tomorrow, this isn't the end of the world, and something can always be worked out. What baseball participants do not want to encounter is an umpire who takes this "F this, F you, I'm outta here" attitude.

This. Heavy winter long sleeve shirt with whatever advanced winter layering under your CP. Or Plate Coat with the same. I have seen an MLB ump with what looked and fitted like a shirt but the fabric looked more like a jacket fabric. I would buy one if I knew what it was.

I think there are some jackets that can be tucked and others that have to be cut right to fit right.

Looking the part is what it's all about.

The last few years the MLB guys have a jacket option that most wear untucked.  It’s fitted so it looks ok IMO and resembles one of the new Davis offerings.

Yep the GD BFX Softshell fits like you describe. It's sweet.

Because the OP is a Smitty, (over)cut to accommodate Plate. 🤢

And to my basic point of the OP...Perhaps I shouldn't have blanketly said "untucked is a bad look". That's not really what I meant. Untucked, hanging down almost to the pant inseam, flapping in the breeze, is not a good look.

#NoJacketsOnPlate

In Colorado, I've NEVER met a fellow umpire who believes this nonsense.  Our high school and college seasons are in the spring, which means I've umpired in snowstorms before.  You're insane if you think that's a reasonable dress code in Colorado.

I umpire in a place that is FAR worse for weather in the spring.

I almost never wear a jacket on the plate. They're not good for it. It's either cold enough for a coat, or in-between for long sleeves. Jackets don't breathe well and compound the stickiness of having insulation strapped to your chest. (Plus, I think they look like absolute SH*# on the plate. If you're thin, you look like a tall black lollipop, and if you aren't, you look like an engorged tick.)

If you ever see me with a jacket on the plate, it's a sign that we are not getting that game in, because I will only wear one for protection from heavy precipitation.

Now, that is for me and me alone, and I would not say/influence anyone else to follow what I do.

I just had a thought. If someone were to make a plate jacket, with side pockets large enough for baseballs, so that it could stay untucked, that would look infinitely better than tucked with ball bags.

Same here--further north.

That said, I do think shirts look better than jackets and I'll make every effort to wear a shirt when I have the plate in the early season. My go to combo this season was a wicking, long sleeve black shirt, then the convertible Gerry Davis jacket, then my CP, then my shirt. There were some days where I was sweating and the game temps were in the low 40s.

What, to not wear jackets on plate?

My sentiment has two underlying meanings – the first is technical, the second is satirical.

From a technical standpoint, most jackets – especially the crude, low-quality material models from… our “usual suspects” – are treated to not be breathable, and become insulative for wrong reasons or methods. The more heat you generate, and retain, the more fatigued you get.
Jackets are typically oversized, or poorly fit to accommodate plate armor. Armor which, again in typical fashion, is oversized and poorly fit to the wearer.

From a satirical perspective, I routinely exaggerate and ridicule attire choices (and directives) because, at the end of the game, what does it really matter? It doesn’t! If someone is paying for your uniform, then yes, they absolutely have the right to tell you what to wear. But short of that, no-HO-no… we’re free-thinking adults here; we should be able to wear what we want, contextually appropriate to the game.
