I would think from a safety stand point MLB would step in and be like um wear something that 1 looks more pro and 2 is safer...  that mask looks SCARY.   in more ways than 1

 

I say this cause I would not like to see a guy get injured due to equipment.. no disrespect meant to P.C. meant.

Is this a case of not wanting to use regular season gear during spring training (I don't know if the OP photo is a current photo)?

Phil spoke at my umpire school graduation and brought up that lots of guys in the league give him crap about his gear but he just likes what he’s used to and grew up not throwing stuff away.
