Ejection and no substitutes

Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 3343 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

Question

Game played under fed rules. In the bottom of the last inning, the home team is down by two runs. With two outs we have runners on first and second. Batter hits a home run which should win the game. However, immediately after hitting the homer, the batter does a huge bat flip and the bat lands almost out at the pitching mound. Umpire had issued a warning for a carelessly thrown bat earlier in the game so he ejected the kid this time. There were no eligible subs to run the bases for the batter so is the batter out and the other two runs score? Or can the most recent batter not on base run for the batter in this situation?

I would have just watched the base touches and left after that.  Real nice to put yourself in the game. For what purpose?

Are you saying that you wouldn't have ejected?

Exactly what I'm saying.  All it's doing is creating an unneeded sh** storm.  And one heck of a bat flip to wind up by the pitcher's mound?

Precisely why the ejection needs to happen. I don't give a rat's ass about a SH*#storm. I do care about taking care of business when the situation warrants.

Enforcing MC provisions is not correctly described as "putting yourself in the game." Better description: "doing your job."

FED has consistently stressed handling post-game problems with ejections and reports. The game being over confers no permission for douchebaggery (or worse). This game wasn't even over: we have to address MC.

Recommended mechanic in 3 easy steps:

  1. When the MC occurs, point and verbalize, "That's MC!" (If the guilty party stops, wave or verbalize for him to continue running.)
  2. When play is over, score the run and eject the player.
  3. Go home and bask in a job well done. Write any required reports.

Add me to the list of those who are ejecting and writing the reports.  In most leagues, there will be a "post game ejection" penalty

Same here, especially when the OP states that the game is played under FED rules.  And wasn't it just a year ago that FED had a POE about throwing bats?   And this hot dog throws it so high it ends up near the mound?    "Gone."  This report can be written with 25 words or less.

So, because the game is over the players can now punch each other in the face and tell you to go have coitus with yourself, and not be ejected?   The game being "over" is irrelevant (besides, it's not over until BR touches home).  From the time you enter the field to the time you leave it you are in charge.

Besides, ejections don't take effect until the play in question is complete, so you're not really putting yourself into anything.

We talk about game management all the time and picking your battles. How is this a battle worth fighting? Game over no one was going after the umpire or attacking him.

Were punches mentioned in the OP?  Was anybody cursing at the umpire after the game or during the game in the OP?  NO.

I know what MC means.  MC wasn't mentioned in the OP.

He threw a bat almost 60 F*#King feet. If there's a suspension policy, he needs to sit for that. That's not just unsportsmanlike, it's downright dangerous.

Would you have ejected him for the same act in the first inning?

If no, then your "game is over" argument is irrelevant.  If yes, then your "game is over" argument is wrong.   If it warrants an ejection on the first pitch of the game it warrants it on the last pitch of the game.

See, though @beerguy55this is where misapplied rulings (i.e. "Outs") come from. Game participants on the "losing" side want / press for / demand for justice and satisfaction – their pound of flesh. Not only did they lose, but they lost to a guy who embarrasses them (endangers is a viable interpretation, as per @Matt). In today's culture, to wound someone's feelings is more egregious than to wound them physically. Booboos and bruises heal, but YouTube videos are forever.

So in their rationale – their pissed off, emotional rationale – an Out is warranted. It doesn't matter to them if the offending player is Ejected and suspended for one game or an entire season – they want there to be a penalty, something that neutralizes and erases the embarrassment that they feel now. And they will hammer on an umpire (official) until justice is dispensed!!! Not every game can have a @maven, a @noumpere, a @Mattor a @BrianC14 on it, but surely it would take an umpire like @maven to successfully end it and mitigate the outcry from it. The HR stands (so, sorry offended team, but the run(s) score(s)), the game is now over, and that pompous a$$ player is Ejected. News at 10. Because game management is not the forté of many umpires, and they've rarely if ever been witness to a situation like this, they seek "balance" (immediate punishment – an Out – fits the crime) instead of Rules correctness.

I'm not isolating @umpstu and his opinion in any way. In fact, I favor his inaction over the typical reaction made by other amateur umpires – calling an Out on the offending player and taking run(s) off the board that would otherwise, correctly, stand. Thing is, Stu, you're seeing it as an avoidance of a sh!tstorm; the hitch is, the sh!tstorm is going to hit you regardless... it was destined to as soon as the offending player let loose the bat.

Oops. I lost track. Sorry.

It's UNS, not MC. Doesn't change the substance of my reply.

You had me rereading the OP a few times thinking I misread it. LOL  That was the reason for the question.
