Like the question says... I need an upgrade from my Davishins and there's some All-Star LGU2000s on eBay right now for a decent price. I think I'm leaning more toward single knee, but what are your preferences? What level of ball do you work?

I voted double because I like that protection above the knee but I really like my Davishins.

Those are double knee shin guards, not single.

Based on design, the only single knee shinguard I think I'd trust is the All-Star and that's because there's an extra plate over the area below the knee. The other single knee shinguards that are out there are on the lower end.

I wear Pro9 double knee shinguards right now but they're due to be retired. They've done the job but I'm going with the Force 3 double knee next. Though I have been hit on the lower thigh above the knee, I do not like how restrictive the bulky triple knee shinguards are.

Are you sure? By single/double I mean the additional pad above the knee itself, like the difference between the LGU1000 and the LGU2000. The UEs look more like a single-knee than double-knee design.

Just wish it were possible to get the UE shins into Canada for a decent price. I measure up at a 14.5" shin and I've only seen one pair come up for sale here, but it's still too pricey with the exchange rate where it's at.

All Star seems to use a different nomenclature from most manufacturers.

What All-Star is calling a double knee most seem to call a triple knee. All Star's single knee is more like what those call a double knee. Force3 calls that similar style a double knee.

Check out Ump Attire's page to see what I mean:

I get now that you're asking about the extra plate above the knee cap. I don't care for those myself.

I've only ever worn doubles and I like them a lot. I currently have the All-Star double knee shins.

But, when these wear out I'm considering the Diamond Featherweight.

Those are what I have, great shin guards. I feel less in those than I do my "premium" guards. Light weight and airy too, perfect for kiddie long slots.

Another vote for F3/UE.  Its like having nothing on at all...except for when you get hit and don't feel it.

I have never owned them, but if you have the change I would go with the F3/UE. I have owned the platniums and they are very hot and heavy. Great protection, but again very heavy. Another one you may consider is the Honigs Elite 2010. For $59.95 they appear to have a little less padding than the Platniums, but way more than all the thin padded light weight selections out there. I have never owned them, but a few guys I know wear them and like them.

If the exchange does not kill you the shipping will. I just bought a U$ 49 jacket and it cost me over $100 and that was with a reasonable U$ 27 shipping fee.

Hey Jim @JimKirk,

I was wondering if there is any other shipping options that you could give for us Canucks up here? Your prices are great and only outdone, from the feedback in the forum, by your service. But as Mike says, the exchange and shipping kills us up here. I know from my experience, I can track USPS packages through our postal service (Canada Post) once they hit the border. Time is not an issue, especially during the off-season.

Just some feedback as I would buy from you.

they all rip u off on shipping to Canada....its not the shipping or the dollar that kills u....its the duty and taxes...80 dollars worth of gear from usa sent to Canada is 46 Canadian in import taxes hst and clearance on top of the shipping.....5 oz team wendy pads shipped to my aunts place in port huron  from ump attire was 8.90. I didn't buy them from ump attire...a week later I got 7.8 pounds of umpire stuff from terry ringer official call in west Virginia and shipping was 21.90 American and I got it in three days....from ump attire probably would cost me triple . Also bought a pair of umpire pants from a guy in texas and the shipping was 8.45 to Canada...and ump attire is charging almost 9 bucks to send umpire face mask pads to Michigan for more...from my experience best to deal with for shipping to Canada with good prices is terry ringer from official call by far the best

I had a pair of these and the first time I got hit in the knee, the knee pad cracked right at the rivet. Felt most of the hits to the shins too. Not even close to the force 3's IMO.

Warren,

I had a pair of those. They were ok. But they do not have enough padding. I took a fastball bounced in the dirt and it hit me square in the pad. Needless to say I felt it. Bruised my thru the shinguard. They are just not enough for HS and up ball IMO. They are extremely light as advertised, but I am not willing to sacrifice the protection.

I have a pair of these.

Lightweight? YES! The lightest I've ever used.

Comfortable? YES! The most comfortable I've ever worn.

Protective? Not so much so. Just adequate. I've been hit in the shins and you feel it. No, there wasn't any injury, bruising, or extreme pain, but you can definitely feel it, enough that you might need to take a minute before continuing.

Durable? I experienced the same knee cup problem that many others have reported- the plastic cracking around the rivets at the knee. Only I didn't even take a hit there! Apparently mine cracked when I fell to my knees after a pitch hit me in a sensitive area. As far as I can remember, I've never taken a ball to the knee in these, but both knee cups are cracked.

I have had the Wilson Platinum shin guards my entire career. While you can hear the contact I have never once felt anything through the plastic and padding. That being said they've been pretty well covered in sweat most games I have ever done. Curious to make the switch to the UE's one of these days.

I'm in the US and Ringer wanted around $10 to ship a $1 game card to me.

Thanks for the feedback, maybe I'll pass. My All-Stars have a good number of games left in them.

Your All-Stars are shocked. Get The Force3 shin guards.
