IFF Not Called - Test Question

RULING: With Runners on 1st and 2nd and 1 out, the batter hits a pop fly ball within the infield.  The short stop is under the ball with “ordinary” effort but neither umpire calls “infield fly”:

a. Infield Fly
b. The ball is a live and in play
c. Even though neither umpire properly calls “infield fly” it is still in effect.
d. Both a and c are correct

Additionally, if the IFF is called incorrectly, it is the responsibility of the offense to know the situation and the batter/runner is still entitled to 1B.

I agree that both A and C are correct, but also think B is correct as an IFF is a live ball.

If it's an NCAA question I think "B" would be the correct answer. At the end of action, the batter will be out, runners advance will be allowed and no DP can be recorded due to failure to declare IFF. Edited to add: The batter would be out if the umpires recognized their failure. Which in hind thought makes "B" the only correct answer the way the question is worded.

It's a Fed question.  I agree on your assessment if it's NCAA (or OBR).

We have all been through this kind of thing with the FED tests. We need to think of what answer THEY want. Not what might actually be correct.

My guess, the correct answer would be D. Since we can go back and correct or mistake.

Is that question about testing an umpire's rule knowledge or preventing perfect test scores ?

I've been given an advance copy of the test (which is a study guide, from which the test questions will be selected) because I'm assisting the Instructional Chairman as the rules interpreter, so I MAY have an opportunity to influence the question to be edited before it's sent out to the full membership.

Seems to me the best option to edit this would be to make option D "All of the above."

I posted this here to get the opinions of a wider audience that this question is, in fact, confusing and should be changed.  That seems to be the case.

it's a shame that a HS rules test question / questions are looking more and more like a College Entrance Exam ..... it's not what you know, ...it's HOW YOU TAKE the test....
