If you start at 00:23 you will see this is why you must wear a TG!!! This could have been disastrous!

But only if you actually have a neck.

It apparently fits tighter on the Force 3.  Although I admit I don't know why he would need to loose it on any other mask, once the TG was attached.

That is why I ask - Why do you want to cut the neck guard off the mask, if it already has one?

Just an excuse for him to talk about Force3 gear again.

@maineump, there are some umpires (I think Corey Blasner does it, and at least one of the gang here at U-E) who chop the chin guard off their mask frame so the attached throat guard can swing freely.

With the mask unaltered, the attached throat guards are either attached behind the fixed chin guard, restricting them swinging forward, or attached in front of the chin guard, resulting in it not swinging very much at all.

In this 2014 video, Wegner's TG is attached with button-snap straps. The force of the ball hitting this area knocked the TG off. He could have used velcro straps, zip-ties... whatever.

@gnhbua93, are you saying that Wegner now currently wears a Force3 Defender?

Putting the throat guard in front of the fixed chin guard scares me. I feel like a throat guard should be allowed to swing and putting it there directs all the force back to the chin.

I didn't post the video, good sir. Just copy and paste it manually and you'll see it.

I have a Mizuno mask without an integrated throat guard, and just has the added guard. I have been hit hard in the throat wearing that mask, IMO I will never wear a mask without the guard being part of the mask again for higher level ball. I may be lucky, but (knock on wood) the guard has always done its' job on my masks.

I have worn a throat guard on my masks (behind the one on the mask) and never had a problem. I use the 4" model.

I just don't see cutting the masks protective pieces off, because it looks good or because some in the MLB do it. They have better workers comp than I do.

That's only for employees. Amateur umpires are independent contractors, thus you are correct.
