  1. The first example in his video where there's contact but no interference, is a little contact okay but not a lot? Is it a higher bar to interference than there is to obstruction? Seems to me like the first example should clearly be something.... I'm not trying to stump the ump, I genuinely don't know the rule here.
  2. Does that make this explanation by Ted Barrett incorrect?
  3. Never thought of that, interesting point
  4. If he had called time "mid flight" the correct call would be to treat it as if time hadn't been called? Sorry I'm ignorant of the rules here...
  5. Batter collects first career hit, defense throws it to his dugout, umpires confer and say time wasn't out, award the batter third base. To me it looks like the Kellogg calls time at about the 10/11 second mark. Thoughts? http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/11493214/v1016555583
  6. True, sorry, I should have said he's supposed to call time, then point to the awarded base, but I might be misremembering. Something similar to this play that 24sdad posted a while back: http://m.mlb.com/video/v8725303
  7. Any thoughts on the mechanic by PU? I thought he's supposed to point to the awarded base (in this case home) rather than signal safe? http://m.mlb.com/video/v954141183/?game_pk=448289
  8. Just pointing out, this thread was started to discuss the first play from this week. The second, older play is included just for comparison's sake, I'm not looking to rehash the second play...
  9. http://m.mlb.com/video/v893676883/?query=oddities Looks like it could be called on the pitcher. Not much chance of him being safe, but if they called it in the below play, can't it be called here?
  10. http://m.mlb.com/video/v893153683/?query=umpire
  11. http://m.mlb.com/video/v865286483 Probably would have still gotten him though...
  12. http://screengrabber.deadspin.com/idiot-on-the-field-runs-out-in-middle-of-live-play-1782622077 If the left fielder drops the ball do you kill it and start over? Or do you only do that if the fan gets in his way or makes contact with him? Or would the out stand and runners go back to their base at TOP?

I mean something like this http://www.baseballrampage.com/Baseball/Protective-Equipment/5220/CFPBH-Vented-Pro-Base-Coach-Helmet.html paired with the traditional mask. Seems like a good compromise between the old school v. new school way (granted it doesn't protect the sides of the head as well).

Why isn't there more talk about using a catcher's style helmet and mask? This would seem to prevent some errant bat injuries (granted not as much protection to the side of the head) but also fare better in the concussion department vs. a bucket. Catchers wear the helmet with a forward facing brim now a days too, so I don't think it should necessarily be disqualified because of the backwards facing brim.
  15. Think you're missing the video link, would be interested to see it
  16. http://m.mlb.com/video/v825938883/?query=oddities What is the rule here? What I've heard is the defense has to announce they're appealing the play and step on first or tag him, otherwise the umpire acts as if BR touched first base and calls him safe. At least that's what I learned in my HS association. Did Hunter not call him out immediately because he's waiting for Hanley to announce why he's tagging him?
  17. Am I considered the troll? My apologies if my posts haven't been helpful, I'm trying to learn...
  18. http://m.mlb.com/video/v792256183/clesea-mariners-benefit-from-attempted-quick-pitch/?query=umpire Question: I'm not sure of any of these answers, so please let me know if I'm wrong. If this happens with a runner on 1st, it's a balk, correct? If this happens with a runner on 3rd who's breaking for the plate, it's batter interference, correct? What would be the punishment?
  19. I feel like there would be no balk to start with, but if it were called there would probably be an ejection, especially after he mocks the umpire by coming set for literally 10 seconds at the 3:03 mark.
  20. http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/6479266/v602927283 Thoughts on McGwire coming to pull away Andy Green? Think it was because Green's argument was theoretically with all the umpires on the field, so none of them could really come and pull Green away like the crew chief usually does when the argument is with a different umpire?
  21. My apologies, still learning so I probably got the terminology wrong. Sorry if it seems like I dump on MLB calls, as I know they're some of the best at what they do and hopefully someday I can get to that level. I thought it was interesting what would have happened had this worked, and how the crew would have handled the protest. I thought in this situation it was the right call, as the two were just joking around.
  22. Good no call, but if he somehow actually fooled the player and tagged him out, you would disallow it right? http://m.mlb.com/video/v582837383
  23. Look familiar? http://m.mlb.com/video/v584498183/?query=infield%2Bfly
  24. I have a feeling this may have been produced for MLB executives, players, coaches, and umpires and just done on the MLB Network set, distributed internally in MLB and then they decided to upload it to mlb.com. It's strange to me that its only tag is "MLB Network" and not "umpire" or anything like that.
  25. Here's some more explanation: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/170871210/rule-erases-doubt-on-slides-gives-protection
