Sorry for the delay in updating what I received back from my asisgnor and my association interpreter. Too many games, too much life giong on. The interpreter thought that it was not umpire interference and the assignor thought it was. It seems that there are different schools of thought.

A conversation with one of them went through umpiring versus rules and trying not to grab the dirty end of the stick, which makes a whole lot of sense.

It is interesting, however, that two high school interpreters in the same state, independent of each other, both came to the same conclusion. @Richvee and I both are in NJ, but we belong to different associations that have overlapping territories becuase assigning is not connected to an association, rather, it is done by an independent organization that services almost the entirety of northern Jersey.

With regard to plate mechanics, I don't know that a clinic is in order as this is something that has never happened to me prior and rarely do I hear anything from the benches about balls and strikes, which is likely more important than an unfortunate circumstance of a catcher stepping on my foot once in 12 years.

One of the nice things about UE is that I can continue to improve my understanding and application of so many unique situations. Thanks guys!

So you've never had an F2 step back and to his left and make contact while you were calling a pitch? You're my hero. :notworthy:

I expect you're aware of all this and just took issue with the snark.

Could coaches manipulate the rule and teach the catchers to intentionally run into the umpire during all steals of 3rd, just like they (coaches) might think of other rules that can be manipulated? Would they do this?, or even think of it?

A few years ago I was at a clinic and the head instructor was Ed Hickox, and during a question on UI he stated that in his declining years Carlton Fisk would seem to back up on a steal to try and get an UI call. I'm sure he's not the only one to try that.

I think the clean end of the stick says call UI here.

That's the intent of the rule.  If F2 does something obvious and intentional to create the contact you don't have to give him the UI.
