Jacoby Ellsbury (who leads the world in drawing C.I. calls including at least three this season) is interfered with but gets a base hit anyway.  Farrell comes out to take the result of the play rather than the interference, which he shouldn't have to do because the batter reached and the runner advanced on the play.

Interesting point, at least to me, is how often Ellsbury gets interfered with.  Does anyone see anything in his swing that seems to draw it?  I can't find the stats but on the broadcast of this game they said that he has been the benefactor of something like 25% of the times Red Sox players have been awarded first on C.I. in team history.

Are we really supposed to ask the manager if he wants to send his runner from the third to second? I would have thought "without reference to the interference" means we just proceed.

6.08 The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put

out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when—

. . .

( c ) The catcher or any fielder interferes with him. If a play follows the interference, the

manager of the offense may advise the plate umpire that he elects to decline the

interference penalty and accept the play. Such election shall be made immediately

at the end of the play. However, if the batter reaches first base on a hit, an error, a

base on balls, a hit batsman, or otherwise, and all other runners advance at least one

base, the play proceeds without reference to the interference.

Rule 6.08© Comment: If catcher’s interference is called with a play in progress the umpire will

allow the play to continue because the manager may elect to take the play. If the batter-runner missed

first base, or a runner misses his next base, he shall be considered as having reached the base, as stated in

Note of Rule 7.04 (d).

Examples of plays the manager might elect to take:

1. Runner on third, one out, batter hits fly ball to the outfield on which the runner scores but

catcher’s interference was called. The offensive manager may elect to take the run and have batter called

out or have runner remain at third and batter awarded first base.

2. Runner on second base. Catcher interferes with batter as he bunts ball fairly sending runner to

third base. The manager may rather have runner on third base with an out on the play than have runners

on second and first.

If a runner is trying to score by a steal or squeeze from third base, note the additional penalty set

forth in Rule 7.07.

If the catcher interferes with the batter before the pitcher delivers the ball, it shall not be considered

interference on the batter under Rule 6.08©. In such cases, the umpire shall call “Time†and the pitcher

and batter start over from “scratch.â€

1st off manager doesn't get a choice.. " if the Batter and all runner's advance one base safely.. then the CI is ignored.

You are correct but they put the runner back so the manager had to go out and get the option. The Showalter has to go out and ask WTH are they doing?

You are right, on this play he does not get a choice because everyone advanced a base, but if that doesn't happen, he does have a choice, per rule 6.08c.  "...the manager of the offense may advise the plate umpire that he elects of decline the interference penalty and accept the play."

Good example would be if CI were to happen in the bottom of the ninth of a tie game, with a runner on 3rd, and the batter hits a fly ball (despite CI) deep enough for R3 to tag up and score the winning run, the manager could accept the out and the run scores.

I made a CI mistake at Umpire school With Ed Hickox watching..LOL.. batter got on base, then I awarded.. I heard from the stands " If the batter and all runner advance one base safely then we don't award Ci"..but i made the award so aggressive. It looked good...Since then I have not missed up at CI award yet.

What are they teaching regarding the sit if a manager does have a choice? He has to know he has the option and ask for it or do you offer it to him?

The guideline we were taught was not to offer the option, that the manager has to ask for it if he wants it. However, we were also taught that the manager doesn't have to specifically say "I want my option", but any sort comment along the lines of not liking the result and you'd ask "So you want your option".

What's the default?  Enforce the CI?

Unless the BR and all runners (if any) safely advance one base then enforce the CI. At that point the manager may choose to keep the play as it happened, or not. If they do all advance one base, then play continues without referring to the CI.

I'm going to rephrase my question.  I'm looking at only the case when the manager has the option.

6.08 The batter becomes a runner and is entitled to first base without liability to be put
out (provided he advances to and touches first base) when—

The catcher or any fielder interferes with him. If a play follows the interference, the
manager of the offense may advise the plate umpire that he elects to decline the
interference penalty and accept the play. Such election shall be made immediately
at the end of the play.

I interpret that to mean the if the professional manager says nothing, the umpire enforces the catcher's interference.  (That's the default.)  He gets the result of the play only if he specifically asks for it.  Right?

In professional baseball this is what I understand. How we do it at lower levels, I can't remember what guidance or where it comes from but MS Taylor is correct. Unless he isn't. But that's how I'm doing it at my levels. But let's not talk about the penalty or the play for a balk.

Assuming that there's an option, yes the CI is enforced, putting runners back/cancelling outs/etc. The manager will likely come out as you're doing this, and pretty much has to given the wording of "immediately at the end of the play", unlike appeals that can be made up until the next pitch/play is attempted.

If the manager has a choice, they want the manager/ coach to come to the Umpire.. the Umpire should never go to the coach/ manager to let him know what his choices are.

At the pro level they have to know.

yes.. unless Br and all runner advance 1 base safely.. then there is no CI

LL teaches that you tell the manager he has an option and to word the choices in a manner that make it obvious which he should choose.

I agree with this, to a point.  In LL, definitely offer the choice to the manager.  It's unrealistic to expect that a guy who was talked into managing the team because there were not enough volunteers would know this rule.

That said, it's not always obvious.  Top of the 1st - no score.  R3, no outs.  Batter clips F2's glove but hits a fly ball to F9.  The ball is caught and R3 tags and scores.  The choice is (1) 1st and 3rd with no outs, or (2) one run in, nobody on and 1 out.  I would explain it to him that way and let him figure out if he wants to go for the big inning, or take the sure run.
