How do you 'see' this, and/or get in the proper position?

At some point the runner is going to pass between you and the fielder and that's always when the tag attempt happens.  especially in two man there's just no way you can always get this right.  The umpire here did do a little lean to try to see down the baseline but that's about the only angle that will usually work.

Don't you think its reasonable for U2 to voluntarily go to U1 or PU for help in this case, as the tag attempt obviously happened behind the runner away from you, so I'd be thinking I may have not got the best angle on that let me check with my partners to see if they had something different.

I like how the color guy says "looks good [like a tag] from this angle" when they show the angle the ump had and then, mere seconds later, says how "CLEARLY" it wasn't a tag when shown a different, slo-mo angle.

Asshat.

I think that especially at the level most of us do that we could treat it like a swipe tag at first and look for help, but we'd certainly have to make a call first then wait for the request.  And, of course, only if we were working 3man or more.

Some coaches/players go crazy over bang bang plays that go against them, but this huge missed tag barely gets a wimper of complaining out of the Nationals!  I don't get it?  and one would think they had a pretty good view of it from the 1B dugout.

This is a tough play to get the correct angle on. Laz could have taken a step toward first base I suppose.

The announcer was referring to the runner at 3rd scoring had the double play not been made, that would have made the runner who would have been on 2nd the tying run. All fantasy, and moot anyway.

Maybe he did see it tag. (Or what looked like a tag) Maybe he didn't think he missed it.

Well, that's great advice...but it's not quite as effective when there's 6 high definition cameras looking at every angle.

Disagree. You're implication is if you don't totally see it, sell it anyway.  Why not just get just get help if you're not sure that you didn't get a great look, if they saw what you saw great, if they saw something different, then change the call

So if I'm behind the plate and I'm not sure if its a ball or strike I should ask my partner? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2

There is only one view that counts! For better or worse.

There are times when no matter how much you want to, you can't get help. You have to live or die by what you saw, based on your angle at the time.

There's one in every group... If you don't have the best position to call the pitch, and your not set for it, then maybe you shouldn't be doing the plate. If you have both of those things, why would you need help, other than when asked for check-swings? Unlike balls and strikes, despite the best possible training, years and years of experience, and absolutely perfect rule knowledge, the way a play develops can sometimes put you in a bad position to make the call. That's when you might need to get help. In this one maybe he saw a tag on the back of the right hand/arm. Maybe he saw a puff of the shirt at the right time for a tag on the back. Maybe he heard a sound. Until he uploads the recoding from his Google Goggles - especially given the lack of argument - I'm prepared to cut him some slack. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

There's one in every group...

k Not sure if you are referring to me but I've been umpiring for almost a year. I'm told that next year I have a good chance of moving from t-ball to coach pitch!

I even read a book about umpiring. I'll get to the rules book this year if I can find one with pictures.

I haven't missed a call yet even though coaches say I do!

With my short experience I believe i am a better umpire than most people here.

Feel free to ask for advice.

They are moving you from tee ball because they said you scared the kids! Don't let your head get too damn big.

Tough Call

Maybe a jab step to the outside would have helped??? But as a guy who was recently dinged for not selling a tough call... He probably wants to try and sell it better.
