Looked out to me on the second replay. Got him on the side just before his hand hit the  plate.

It's possible that Washington may have done a 180 because the runner told him it was an OK call.

As a runner I could feel a tag and feel a base touch so I had a good idea of what the call should have been.

Rangers' runner nods "yes" to whatever Washington asked him and then Wash does the 180.

"Were you out?"

Nod.

180 back to dugout.

"Were you safe?"

Nod.

180 back to dugout (don't make sense)

"Dinner tonight?"

Nod

180 back to dugout (Better go make reservations!)

Agree with Jax - 3BLX does not put a sliding body between you and tag/touch of plate.

Edit - posted at same time with Rich and agree on second replay.

Yeah, I watched this play last night on my DVR and I had no clue why he didn't get to 3BLX on this play.

He would have had a perfect view. It's a damn hard call no matter what. But so much harder to see where he is.

Certainly not in the catcher's pocket. :)

Agree ms. Should have been on catchers "glove side hip". Not 3BLX.After watching video I remembered that there are 2 optimal positions you can be at. They are exactly opposite of each other. So he was in the "other" optimal spot.

I think he was 1st base extended is because there was a play at first--home plate has to look up line to help on a pulled foot etc. etc.

Two questions:

  1. Can't you still see a pulled foot from 3BLX (maybe not as well but...)?
  2. Isn't his primary responsibility HP, and shouldn't he be in the best position for that potential play?

Nope. Not at that level.  They're expected to get their own calls (should be the case at all levels)

Primary responsibility is the play at the plate that could result in a run.

He was at the point, which is a good starting position, just didn't rotate.

I've seen managers save players before, but this was a first of a player saving the manager.

Very Classy. With everybody wearing 42 I don't know for certain who the runner was.  But he deserves some credit.
