Brothers

I took a shot to the throat on Sunday during an Adult Game.

Foul into the dirt that some how got under my AllStar HSM, got my throat and put me down.

I did finish the game and did not think much about it.

My voice got horse Sunday night along with a sore throat.

I checked my Larynx this morning and did not like how it felt.

I felt a clicking in it.

My throat was still sore and voice was still horse.

Went to urgent care this morning.

They did some xrays and called a ENT Doctor in.

The ENT Dr. felt my Larynx and immediately said I had a fracture.

He then scoped my throat through my nose.

My voice is horse because of the trauma to my vocal cords.

He ordered a High Res CT Scan and said when he gets to review the CT Scan this afternoon and see how the fracture is, he will consider possible surgery. He said he would call me today if he feels surgery is necessary to close the gap and to schedule it asap.

If nothing else I follow up next week with him.

I know there has been a lot said about throat guards.

I always wore one with my standard mask, but never since I switched to HSM.

I felt it protected the area enough.

Brothers, please take my advice and never think never.

Please get one if you don't use one.

Right now I am nervous about possible surgery and not knowing when I can go back out on the field again right now.

I already had to turn back two games for tomorrow night and advise the assignor to keep me off the schedule till further notice.

SWMBO is saying time to change careers.

Please wear throat protectors

I have personally never worn one. I have 2 prototypes that I fabricated. Soon as they get powder coated, they will be beta tested. Probably become as customary as my cp. Hope you feel better WITHOUT going under the knife.

Took a foul off my throat guard Sunday. Deflected the ball down and off my CP. Made me think about the huge protection for such a minimal price. Get well soon brother! Hope you can heal without the surgery.

Get well soon Semper. I had one get under my mask this year (clearly not as bad as yours), almost bought a throat guard but couldn't settle on one. Still evaluating (if anyone has recommendations, send them my way), but will have one for next season.

I've seen the gap when I wear a HSM, and see your point. It's far bigger than a traditional mask (on me, at least). Another reason I rarely sport the helmet.

Hope all works out for the best. You need your voice, Marine.

Fellas, put your mask and chest protector on, get down in your stance, and have someone take a picture of you from the side. See that gap? Close it down somehow. Or, maybe straighten up your stance a bit, and stop leaning over.

That five dollar hunk o' plastic has worked just fine for me, over the years. Five times it's literally saved my neck. Plus, I'd think a big, thick piece of plastic might be better than a thin piece of metal, if the contraption happened to jump up and try to bite me.

I know the cool factor of those Mizuno rigs has a lot of you swooning, but honestly guys, what would you rather get hit by?

Best wishes and prayers for your return to good health. Consider your advice taken. I have worn one ever since my second season. I have been "clacked" enough to realize it is a vital piece of gear. I wear the 4" plastic model attached to the bottom of the frame (not the mask TG extension). It fills the gap nicely without hanging down too far.

Up Date!!!!!!

ENT Doctor called.

No Surgery.

Clear fracture the Cricoid....Google it lol.

Some of the things he told me scared the hell out of me.

He said if I had gone into an emergency room or urgent care on Sunday right after the injury I probably would have had a Tracheotomy, but 48 hours after I am out of danger of my airway collapsing.

He also talked about a couple of nerves that run through it for speech and thinks we came close to damaging one of them.

So for now we watch it.

Let it heal like a normal fracture for about 6 weeks.

I am not cleared to work games, even on the bases until he does a follow up next Wednesday.

He said we can discuss that then.

He did say not to even think of putting myself in a position to get hit again for 6 to 8 weeks.

I will take and try to enjoy the rest.

Find me a throat guard for my HSM.

Now the major problem is SWMBO.

After two concussions and now this this year, she is starting to look at me like, "seriously, how much more can you take"?

Or "maybe you should look for another job"?

Semper- I hope your feeling better Marine. Stay focused and most importantly take care of yourself. The game will always be here when you return. And as a fellow Jarhead I know you will return. I always wear my throat guard, and I tell all the new guys to wear one too. Stay safe and carry on. Semper Fi Devil Dog!!!!
