  1. I thought I remember seeing him on here. What ever... right?
  2. Yeh, there are some leagues that still use the navy blue. Oddly enough I caught a San Jose Giants game this year (Class A California League) in which the plate guy had on a navy shirt and the base umpire had a black jacket on. It was a little strange.

    Journals

I started mine at the request of a senior umpire friend of mine and from Warren's recommendations. I did pretty well during the college season but fell off after I lost my job and the end of the college season. Im hoping to try and start it back up next year after the move.
  4. This is right up there with a summer HS game I worked some time back. LHP on the mound jump turns to 3rd but doesnt throw. The OHC comes out and wants me to balk the guy (I was the plate guy in a three man crew cause the assignor screwed up and sent us a third guy). He wanted me to talk to my partners and I was so shell shocked that I did just that to make sure I didnt screw up. Both base guys agreed with me and I was kicking myself after the game for going to my partner with such a stupid question. The OHC after the game walks up to me (we have known each other for a couple years) with rule book in hand and sheepishly tells me he got it wrong. It was one of those great internal moments.
  5. sounds right to me.
  6. Im pulling for you. cant wait to see the prototype.
  7. I actually agree with both of those comments. It happened right at the beginning of the show. Kelly actually isnt there but there was an equally pretty blond taking her place today. They introduce Nuart and Schriber right after they talk about the Baltimore Orioles. Warren, they show them in maybe the first 5 or so minutes into the show. The rest afterwards is trash so watch it for that and then drown it out for the rest of the time the better half is watching.
  8. Actually I thought that most of his protectors with the plastic shell went from about $220 to $270? Thats not much more (especially with some of us shelling out $200+ for a mask) than what some of the top flight CPs run for. Honestly though... its the one piece of equipment I wish I had sprung for when i could have.
  9. Isnt Tim also on this site? No matter. I dont recommend getting into that arguement for you WILL not win it. Not only that I dont think any of the rest of us want to go through dealing with that argument again.
  10. I was hoping that someone would repost this! Still my favorite parts are Wally Bell saying "DON'T" and Girardi RUNNING from the dugout to try and stop Damon. Then the minute he draws the line, Girardi slows down cause he knows whats coming and you can see his mind going "darn it, not fast enough". As for drawing lines. I missed the only time that has happened to me... but that was almost 6 years ago. I saw two or three players do it this year (all of them were HS players playing summer Pony ball) and both time the player only got a warning.... if that!
  11. I can swear I once saw a clip of Willy Stargell(sic?) trying to steal second and as he is getting thrown out by a mile and a half he is trying to call time by making a T with his hands. I think that was the same game that Ron Luciano refers to in one of his books where he accidently got Stargell picked off of second while talking to him.
  12. Dont know if anyone else saw this (or did I just happen to catch it cause I was on here and I sadly am unemployed)? Two of the four umpires that worked the Mets game at Citi Field in New York were in the audience for todays Regis and Kelly show. Paul Schriber and Paul Nuart where there. Evidently "Cowboy" Joe West was also supposed to attend but he had to attend a union meeting. Nothing interesting, just love when us umpires get some recognition out of the blue.
  13. Ill stick with Brian on this argument. I too am not a fan of the platinum, as stated many times I wear the Gold and swear by it. However, through personal experience, I will say the K1 is "horrible". I dont know if its the one I had or if its just the CP in general but to me it was not much better than the soft "shell" protectors I used to have... at almost double the price point. Nate, I would be more than interested in checking out your CP. I missed out on having a Carlucci (sadly he passed before I could come up with a decent savings plan or my Gold fell apart... which ever came first). Also, once you have a prototype or two, I would be more than willing to put it through its paces for you and returning feedback.
  14. I'm guessing that Cox got run for balls and strikes as well as demonstrating after being asked to stop. With that said, according to the clip, the announcer was Vin Scully and I too agree that he is one of the most impartial announcers around (sadly we are losing him to retirement after the end of this season or maybe next). He is one of the few that will call it how it is and if later it turns out he was wrong, he will say so. Now, if I remember from the OP, you said you were watching it on the regional broadcast which means that Vinny was not the announcer you heard. It was one of the local Braves guys who I know FOR A FACT are homers. I believe you posted the wrong clip (if you could find one of the local braves broadcast it might support your argument better). With that said, the HP did screw up, did take an earful from Bobby and when Bobby didnt comply with his request to stop demonstrating, got the heave ho.
  15. I will say this about the Reeboks. From all accounts, they are some of the most comfortable plates shoes around. Supposedly on par with the comfort of the NBs. I will also recommend for the work boot companies is a company called Leheigh. I think they are based out of Orange County, CA but I could be wrong.
  16. Dave, Add me to that list of equipment elitist! I have the gold, the WV shins and the NB shoes. Only thing I didnt spring for is the titanium and the reebok shoes (didnt know it came in wide when I bought my NBs). I almost exclusively wear the poly-wool pants and wouldnt dream of wearing another type of shirt besides honigs until I tried the Ultimate shirt from Ump-Attire. Now it is those shirts or nothing! I wont go with anything but what I have and thats just the way I always have been. If I could I would have an equipment collection like Major or Tim or Richard (lets just say Im jealous of all the gear these men have). And by the way... Im one of those guys that will swear up and down that the Gold is better than the Platinum (which I have never worn), the K1 (which I am sad to say that I have) or any other protector on the market. Like I said... elitist!
  17. Agreed. Was the first order I made after I ordered my silver diamond from Jim. Replace those junk pads forth-with!
  18. Ill have to look for the shock doctor cups last year. I need to replace the cup I have and this sounds like one of the latest and greatest.
  19. Oh yeh. I remember these. This might be the only other thing I would actually make a trip to honigs to buy besides the poly-wool pants. I like having the jacket on but it gets to hot here in the spring (and forget about wearing anything but short sleeves in the summer)
  20. another thing she can do is get the WV like recommended and then if she is near a honigs store, go buy one of the extenders (if she is that worried about height) and sew it onto the bottom. Not something I have ever had to worry about (being somewhere between 5'9" and 5'10" and a body like a catcher. (enter some what short and some what squat).
  21. As of right now, the GD pants and the honigs poly-wools are the norm for "elite" pants. You also have Smitty and some others (I believe that +POS has rereleased their pants). The new norm in HS is to wear the charcoal pants and NCAA there has not been anything heather gray for the last couple years. The Poly-wool pants will last you a while if you take care of them and, at least in the area Im in, are the norm and are the expected.
  22. Oh yeh, there was a whole story on these guys. They mainly show up at Blue Jay games but have been seen in DC as well as Philly and some other places on the east coast.
  23. I like to say that I remember to put it the ball back in play ALL the time. However there are times that it just skips my mind. Thankfully nothing has happened in those times that I forget. I have found that the times I do forget its usually with no one on and the batter just hit a foul ball and I put a new ball in play. I realize that its something that I should work on, and I try, it just skips my mind some times.
  24. made a couple equipment trades in my time and this was one of the best ones I did. Traded a year old pair of honigs shins for these that were at least 2 or 3 years old... that was back in 2006. Still have and use the WV shins and when its time to get new ones... I wont replace them with anything else.
  25. ditto on that. sounds interesting and since U2 is my favorite all time band... should be lots of fun.
