  1. I too wish I could have been a fly on the backstop to hear what Redmond said.
  2. I wish I had the money... and its not a Gold. Its the original wilson WV cp. However, the shin guards are worth around $120 brand new so the price of those is worth it as is.
  3. you forgot to mention that the gold with the jacket looks good too.
  4. Love the poly-wools. Feel great and the material is a lot tougher than the standard pants. True they are heavier than your normal umpire pants but honestly you dont even notice (and Im talking from experience having worn both plate and base polywool pants in 100+ degree weather)
  5. Pretty much happened already here in Long Beach. Most everyone this year is wearing charcoal and either black or MLB blue. Some still wear Navy but I think that will change with in the next year or two.
  6. Give it a little bit. You will get it. And if you have issues with the straps I recommend sewing them to where you like them or use a heavy duty tape.
  7. yes but how long till they recover from their mistake. I for one have decided to move to Ump-Attire shirts despite how close the Honigs store is to me (15 miles away).
  8. Welcome to the fraternity of WV gold users. There isnt that many of us on these boards but its a great CP and I personally would never use anything different.
  9. Join the crowd. I lost my job as a poker dealer shortly after the start of the HS season so I couldnt get any of those games and all the JuCo games had been assigned beyond the ones I got so there went that. If you dont want to work a league I personally recommend that you dont. It will do nothing but make you jaded about that league and those ball players and, honestly, it does neither you nor them any good. Now on to the situation at hand. I understand why you did what you did. You thought that by backing things up that you would make things even. However a problem arises. Than that is what Mr. Umpire is getting at. You enforced only half the rule. You still called the batter out for the IFF but you let the second half go which was that the runners, by rule, can advance at their own risk and must be tagged to be put out. As you said, this is an instructional league. I put it to you to think how the players would learn better. By seeing the complete rule being used and enforced or enforcing half the rule and explaining the rest. Sit back and think about it and I think you might see what Mr. Umpire was saying. Enforce the whole rule and then if asked explain what happened and why. They will learn better. Also these kids are old enough to understand what happened. Just my humble opinion.
  10. First, how can it be a 4-3 count unless you are using one of those old indicators and you forgot to zero everything out. Its either ball four or strike three. But I digress. I had this same situation during a pony game about a month and a half ago. I was on the bases and a JuCo/HS guy was on the plate. In this league there is a scoreboard with the score and count on it. The operator sits behind home plate along with score keepers for both the home and visitor teams. In this situation the "head coach" didnt show up for the plate conference and didnt let us know he was the head coach so we both went with the guy that was at the plate conference as the head coach. In the 5th with a 2-2 count on the batter (according to both scorekeepers, the score board and PU giving the count before the pitch) the batter swings and misses at the next pitch of strike three. As the defense is leaving the field the offensive "head coach" comes unglued about it only being strike two not strike three. The plate umpire checks with the scorebooks behind him and says everything matches what he had. The coach continues to agrue, gets warned and then gets dumped. It always amazes me that given the information on such things that some of these coaches just dont pay attention and then lose their minds when they think something went wrong.
  11. I want a bumper sticker with that on it.:agasp_:
  12. however Im going to be moving to the portland area by the end of the summer so this could come in handy.
  13. Wait, I object... you arent going to let us vote for what could possibly be the funniest non baseball story of the year? This is America bub... we can vote for what we want and I demand that we be allowed to nominate this post. Beyond that... damn funny post warren... damn funny.
  14. Honestly I think he got all of us.
  15. Hopefully I can get to Fullerton or Irvine to see a game. Especially the Irvine Regional... talk about a group of really good teams. Should be fun... To bad Long Beach State isnt in it. I can walk to their home park.
  16. Lets not forget that this is the same guy that tore an ACL being thrown to the ground by Bud Black while trying to argue with Mike Winters in San Diego (effectively ending any chance the Padres had at going anywhere in the playoffs) and got into a plastic bottle throwing match with a fan while playing for the Dodgers.... AT DODGER STADIUM! So I dont know what anyone is talking about. Dude is complete so he can :BD:
  17. Got an answer to my question on the other site regarding the California schools. We just have to be different in everything huh? Look at our way of handling HS sports. We dont have a state association... we have regional associations.
  18. Ah, I was responding to the OP. Believe it or not, I had a batted ball hitting the pitching rubber and bouncing into foul territory before 1st/3rd base three times in a season... two of them in the same week. And for that matter, nailed them all.
  19. ummm guys a ball hitting a base is a fair ball regardless of where it bounces next. Both situations sound like fair balls to me.
  20. Now mind you Ive been working college ball so these are the guidelines I was talking about. NCAA rule book Appendix E secton C: 1) Deciding if a home run is fair or foul 2) Deciding whether a batted ball left the playing field for a home run or a ground-rule double 3) Cases in which a foul tip is dropped or trapped by the catcher. 4) Cases in which a foul fly ball is caught or not caught. 5) Cases when an umpire clearly errs in judgment becahs he did not see a ball dropped or juggled after making a tag or force. 6) Spectator interference plays. 7) Balks called by an umpire who clearly did not realize the pitcher's foot was off the rubber It continues on but that is the long of the short of it. You can see the whole of Appendix E in the NCAA section on E-Officials
  21. Its hard enough to track pitches coming in (just look at the number of threads on this board and others about it) and they want me to look over 3 feet bellow where the strike heart of the strike zone is to watch their feet? You have to be kidding me. If I see the foot out of the box then I will call it but you have to be kidding me if you think its something I will pay attention to.
  22. definitely a possibility (though I would doubt it... usually you will see at least ONE team from CA in there somewhere). When I looked up the member schools on the site not one in CA came up.
  23. The minute he drew the line he was done. Its no different than when a batter draws a line. as for the customers jumping on you about the batters foot being out of the box ask them which you would rather see a strike thrown by their pitcher or the batters foot maybe being out of the box. Hopefully they arent stupid and take the latter.
  24. I was working a semifinal game at CDP about 6 years ago behind the plate. Took a foul ball off the inside of my right elbow (I work the davis stance). Put ice on it every half inning. The bruise didnt go away for almost two months. I still have nightmares. LOL
