  1. Michael, in trying to silver davis mask you have actually already tried the Diamond silver mask. It is the same mask just rebranded. Kind of like the Geo Metro and the Chevy PT Cruiser. (Same chassie and engine, different body)
  2. Jim must have the largest growing clientele in the umpire equipment market. Everyone I see on these messages boards are talking about him. I would like to see him advertise out in this area (the western half of the US) and work on getting in on Honigs, SOS and GD. Oh, Jim, just to let you know. Your mention in Referee about the ultimate ball bag has gotten some notice out here. Keep it up and you will go far. LOL
  3. Oh my god... not another one!
  4. different ages take different strike zones. Im trying to change my mentality on my strike zone as I am used to varsity and college pitchers. But with Pony and below I need to open my zone in all areas cause for the most part these kids can hit the zone but not always.
  5. I found this post on "Heard a new one last night" interesting and have nominated it accordingly for "Post Of The Month June, 2009"
  6. there is one local pony team here where the catcher will set up in the other batters box... at the instructions of his coach... since the coach is calling the pitches. You dont hear much about "where was that pitch" from him cause he knows what he called but you can hear it a bit from the fans. A fellow umpire told me I should demand that the catcher keep one foot in the catchers box (area since its not chalked in). then if he doesnt start balking the pitcher with runners on.
  7. the padding behind homeplate so that the backstop doesnt cut up the baseball.
  8. I just wish I had read the OP last month cause I totally would have nominated it for post of the month... to bad I cant nominate for June.
  9. Especially if it was a quiet EJ. The "coach, get out of here" variety with little or no physical movement on your part. You could change that to mean "your restricted to your dugout and dont want you to come on the field again or you forfiet". Not that you actually will but just to see what happens. That way you can keep him around.:banghead:
  10. whats this grey pants thing... he needs navy pants with a button up light blue shirt (read ebelco here) and a balloon protector... HA HA HA. this is to much fun
  11. You forgot the snow on the ground that went waist deep. Im not old enough to have walked up hill both ways but I am old enough to have walked up hill on the way to school... and that was bad enough.
  12. it depends on how low is low. My clue is on a fastball if the catcher catches the ball below where his (the catcher not the batter) knees are the pitch is a ball. At or above the catcher's knee then its a strike. Breaking balls are a little harder but if he has to catch it off the dirt or if he catches the pitch and brings the glove up he is telling you it is a ball.
  13. Another thing we are taught as the BU is to call TIME rather than FOUL. This way if the batter is running out of the box and makes contact we arent killing a potential interference by the BR for contacting a fair ball.

    Substitutions?

agreed but since we were talking about FED here I just stuck with that. What I really hate is when I get handed a line up and the subs are listed in the right column in the lineup right where I write in my subs... and of course the spot they write in these bench jockeys is right in the spot where they actually sub the people in and its not the kid they wrote into the right hand column.:banghead::WTF

    Balk in Stretch

I protest... refering to this motley crew of umpires as good company... LOL :banghead:
  16. Honestly if this is the case I would probably go with the Davis pants since the color of the davis is completely different than all the other pants.:banghead:
  17. wait, I ment to ask this before and forgot... what do you mean by E/U?
  18. we actually have been taught to delay our call as this is the PU's call first. If he doesnt react then come up and call it.
  19. Only time in recent memory for me when I had to stop a game for lightning was when I was in Cooperstown some 5 or 6 years ago. It was the hottest summer they had on record for the last decade. Lightning was seen not from my ball field but another one on the complex and all games were stopped for 30 minutes. It passed and all was well. It was just an interesting experience for someone that has never had to deal with it.

    Balk in Stretch

you will find no arguments from me there.. LOL:wave:
  21. One problem you might want to thing about is where is your front leg positioned. It should be at a near 90 degree angle (when I work the scissors I work higher than most so my leg is more at a 70 to 80 degree angle) and and the knee should be right under your shoulders and bent at 90 degrees. I like to put both my hands on my knee or maybe a little behind it and that way I know I am in proper position. Basicly you should be able to draw a straight line from you shoulders, through your arms, down to your knee and leg and directly into the ground. If your front leg is to far in front that could be a reason for your leg problems.

    Balk in Stretch

but if he throws to first it isnt a pitch so that didnt make much sense (even though we all knew what you ment)

    Substitutions?

Is anyone else glad he didnt ask about the NCAA dh rule? Oh man, what a headache. Also not all leagues or states allow the EH. they have it for softball, I believe, but here in CA we dont use it for baseball. He is how I enter, exit, and re-enter players. If someone comes in for a starter I will put a single line through the starter's name. I will then write the name, number and inning of the player that is being subbed in. I will then put an X through his name if it is listed in the subs (my understanding for FED is that they do not need to be listed). Then one of two things will happen. If the sub is subbed for I will put another X through the sub's name and write in the new sub doing the same as before if he is listed below (that is putting an X through his name). OR If they re-enter the starter I will put an X through the sub's name on the line up (he is now done for the game and ineligible to return) and circle the starters name. If they sub for the same starter again, and X goes through his name and the new sub is written in just like the first. Something else that was not mentioned. When a sub is given to you. It is ok to ask if this is what the coach wants to do and confirm it with him. Also take your time to write it in. Dont say you will do it later cause you most likely will forget and now something happens like BOO and you have problems cause you didnt write it in.

    Balk in Stretch

that and that he must complete the throw to first. if he doesnt he as balked.
  25. the davis pants are a different shade of charcoal than the honigs pants are. So much so you can tell the difference from a good ways away.
