  1. Covered in the pregame?? this was an experienced partner, widely respected, I had worked with him many times and we've always worked great together. We never need to signal coverages, because one always knows the other is going to be where he needs to be..We usually remind each other of IFF but that's pretty much it...This wasn't a t-ball game with one umpire and another Daddy ump drafted out of the stands.. It was his call not mine. his perogative to appeal or not and he chose not to. Would I have overruled the appeal? Sure, it was that obvious to me. NOT that I believe 90% of anything that comes out of any rat coach's mouth in a situation like this as to "why" partner didn't appeal in the first place.. No one pregames with every partner every game. Sometimes it's impossible if you have a partner that, for whatever reasons, arrives too close to game time, obviously there's not time. If you are working with the same partners (you pick a number) that you've worked with for ever or you work with several times a week, if you don't know what/where your partner is going to be or do by now something's wrong somewhere. If I, or if a partner has a special problem, i.e. something medical like "back is really sore today", ect, it always gets conveyed by me and if my partner is not initially able to get that same message to me, I can pick up on it and respond accordingly. Nothing wrong with a between innings pow-wow on the sidelines to pass any necessary info back and forth. No need to even discuss the necessities of working with new partners -- you make time and I say to heck with what any game start time or league officials pushing you to get started so they can get out early, ect.. With 95% of the partners that I work with, little, if any pregame is usually even necessary.
  2. I just based my response on this, straight out of the ORB .
  3. Surprisingly, Kyle, I noticed that wearing the Shock Doctor Nano Gel made my voice a little more gruff, so to speak, and I didn't have any problems giving counts, ect. I even apologized once to one of the Momma scorekeepers ( the backstop is pretty close on this field and she had been real nice to me in the previous blow to the head episode with Advil and tylenol) after she had asked me the count and it actually sounded like I was being a real horse's rear end to her request. I learned quickly that using the tether on the mask, it forced me to "spit out" the guard using my tongue as a pusher when removing the mask when coming out from behind the plate, trailing runners, moving the cover third ect.
  4. If you look at the last angle of the catch, the "fan" definately has his hand on top of Bauer's mitt and the fan's recoil is a result of the ball striking his hand, NOT him trying to get out of the way.. As far as the rule concerning it, Rule 2.00 on the defintion of a catch: Rule 2.00 (Catch) Comment: A catch is legal if the ball is finally held by any fielder, even though juggled, or held by another fielder before it touches the ground. Runners may leave their bases the instant the first fielder touches the ball. A fielder may reach over a fence, railing, rope or other line of demarcation to make a catch. He may jump on top of a railing, or canvas that may be in foul ground. No interference should be allowed when a fielder reaches over a fence, railing, rope or into a stand to catch a ball. He does so at his own risk. So good call by Barksdale...My question is, what kind of advertising royalties is he receiving from Wilson for that big 'W' so prominent on that CP ?:banghead:
  5. Last Thursday night in fall HS league, I took my "career" foul ball to the mask from the 4th batter of the game.. I was wearing a Diamond Edge HSM. Pitcher unleashes a (had to be) mid 80's heater that the batter drove straight back and struck me just above my left eye where the mask was secured to the shell itself. All I remember was seeing and feeling the impact and then coming around with a group of voices around me. I don't even remember hitting the ground but somehow landed on my back from being hit in my GD stance. I guess the impact drove me backwards.. No mouthguard..Pain in my head, obviously, and couldn't open my eyes for a few moments and it radiated through into my cervical area of the neck... I don't know how long I was down but I eventually was helped up, walked around a bit and, against advice, "manned up" to finish the game, so I thought. On 2 seperate occasions I felt nausea coming up but was able to counter it. Both times I had to call time and casually stroll around a minute. I made it to the middle of the 3rd. 2 out of the last 3 pitches on the last batter--I barely even saw. I started seeing 1 1/2 pitchers on the mound. It was ( actually past) time to go. I went to my partner and informed him we needed to change. League officials came out and re-checked me again and told me >>. The irony was that I had ordered a Wilson Shock FX HSM on the day before this happened ( Sorry Jim, but yours wasn't available until October:() and, after reading Jim's article on the research for mouthguards, had checked around for a Shock Doctor brand mouthguard, the very same brand mentioned in Jim' latest blog above. I bought one Friday and have worn it once since with the tether attached to mask of the Wilson. Would the Wilson shock HSM have made a difference in the impact that I took? I don't know, but I have tried to simulate what I remember of the impact in the mirror and by side by side comparisons of the Wilson and the Diamond masks. It appears the impact point would have indeed struck the uppermost section of the Wilson facepiece. Would it have lessened the shock?(no pun intended) I would hope that maybe. Would the Shock Doctor Nano Gel model mouthpiece that I now have tethered to the new helmet lessened the effects?? I don't know.Evidence suggests that perhaps it may have.I know the traditonalists will:HS on this subject, as they have on the HSM itself vs traditional masks themselves. But should I experience another quasi career impact such as the one described here, or and even more severe impact, I have tried to take proactive steps in an attempt to alleviate the damage potential and protect what little bit of noggin left that I have. (wife's opinion N/A here:crazy:) And a bit about my "manning up" to finish the game in the first place:shakehead:. I have only worked in emergency services as a firefighter, fire officer and EMT for going on 32 years. And, uhh ahem, have seen a few head injuries on the street in that time and am well trained in the subject matter. Ain't it funny (more like STOOPID:nod:) that I can come to YOUR assistance in a matter same as this and WILL STRONGLY:tantrum: advice YOU as to the treatment and abatement steps that YOU NEED TO TAKE, i.e. be transported to the hospital for evaluations, MRIs, recovery ect--- but am just toooo stoopid to do it myself:bang:.
  6. Hmmmm good points... "Upon further review, the umpire on the field was exercising good, qualitative, game management techniques with proper utilization and demonstration of appropriate safety equipment and related hardware! Therefore the umpire on the field should exercise due caution when awakening from this event that he does not disturb or cause harm to be administered to himself should the sleeping giant beside awaken also and immediately demand to know just who in the h**l these said MILFs may be! The call on the field is hereby reversed!"
  7. I have no problem admitting that I am human. Man has been destined to fail since Eve ate an apple in the Garden of Eden... So here's my latest "greatest": Last Thursday in the Fall Ball HS league. BASE UMP (THAT in itself factors into the story). Bases loaded, 2 outs. Batter swings at one in the dirt that gets away from the catcher. Runners are all moving on the pitch anyways, but now they're really carrying the mail. Runner from third scores easily and here comes the runner from 2nd sliding. Meanwhile catcher fires a bullet to 1st base for out 3. So some moron umpire on the bases announces "Batter's out, score the first run but not the second!":bang: So out comes the defensive coach:WTF--ect ect ect you can fill in the blanks here.. Ever wanted Scotty to REALLY beam you up??
  8. Could have been worse--you coulda woke up standing in front of the MILF section wearing nothing but your jock and a smile..:yippie:
  9. Ahhhhhh I see, that 'splains everything now.....Another good ol' Southern boy, jus' bein' beat down by da' man, aka another damn yankee ump... Uh huh:violin:.....J/K poppy! I dumped a coach in a scrimmage game years ago after a play at the plate where the ball got away from the catcher, the pitcher backing up the plate grabs the ball, in the meantime the catcher seeing his backup in action after the ball, grabs the runner coming in and pulls him away from the plate, whereas the "appropriate" run killing tag is thoughfully applied by the pitcher... I score the run on the OBS and the defensive coach comes out, ala George Brett pine tar style, "that's BS!" ect ,:wave:et al.... Thought about dumping the catcher as well but it didn't quite merit MC and he did actually apologize for his action pretty quickly... I still remember that play anytime that I walk onto that particular field for an assignment and chuckle..
  10. You mean the FED book is inaccurate, confusing, and most likely imported from Mars once a year by little green men in colorful UFOs? Well thank you for ruining it for me!:banghead:
  11. I had a similar sitch years ago with bases full. The pitcher served up a beach ball on a "T", the batter swings for the fence--and the ball went straight down in front of the plate and pretty much completely buried itself in the soft mud. The batter stood there looking like , I'm signalling 'fair', the catcher digs out the ball, tagged him and threw in the general direction of left field, quite successfully, after when all the ensuing excitement and subsequent shouting subsided, 3 runs were in which ended up being the final score. Don't ask me how the catcher failed to step on HP.... The funny part? If I remember correctly, the losing pitcher threw a one hitter and lost 3 - 0 on this one play..:banghead:
  12. Good to have a fellow brother who operates on the periphery... I can usually be found officiating the beer stand or demonstrating techniques/moves/rules or equipment in the MILF section...
  13. Well put and I concur....I feel that the majority of the lurkers think that they might get slammed here and feel hesitant to sign up and jump on in..They should be assured that everyone here puts on their pants, masks or helmets, chest protectors and shin guards the same way as everyone else does.. Forgetting where you came from is a major problem for many people in many different "jobs" other than just this one. That feeling seems to permeate on other sites that I have frequented or still do occasionally.. And forgetting where you came from, IMHO, is one of the biggest and most fatal mistakes that a person can make in ANY job or profession! just my:2cents: before Ohdumbyuh taxes me 37 cents on it to pay for socialist, oh never mind......:givebeer:
  14. It would be a HTBT sitch, BUT, I am with OK96 on heaving him immediately if it was a "cost them 2 runs" blahblah. To me, in that context, it sounds like the game is probably still in progress so, >> On the "cost them the game" I would read that to mean that the game is over, and while you still have "juice" (under FED anyway) until you leave the field, if you him then you're gonna get the proverbial " hey the game's over, how you gonna toss me..." ect ect..Sure, he could MAYBE get penalized by YOUR association or state for the heave ho, but.... Of course, the vorciferous-ness of either insult could only hasten said rat's immediate departure, hence the HTBT 'ness of the sitch..
