:wow:man, how did we miss this?:D

Yup. No longer down this way except for the holidays this year. Its fine about the shoes. I think I wear an 11 or 12 anyways so if there is anyone else that wants them then go for it. And keep working on the kid... he will come around.

in '07 and '08 half of my umpire money was play money much like Warren. However, the start of the '09 season saw the loss of my job. So all money earned from umpiring went into the paying of bills to help suppliment the wife's paycheck. I cant wait to have a job again so that I can use my umpire money for work and for play.

Im sorry. I am still of the thought that the HC is still legally the one in charge of the team since he is the one with the name on the waiver with the league. So if he says "time to go kids" Im not going to argue. Its his choice. Im walking off the field and letting the league handle it. He ended the game and my liability insurance doesnt cover me for no scheduled games... and guess what... once that game was a forfeit, it is no longer a scheduled game.
-
Im guilty of that too honestly. I use a heal-toe/lock-box style of stance as well. I also am closer than some would like in that stance as well. As for the plate shoes, my bad:smachhead:. Its probably the reflection from the lights that got me.

I have about 6 or 7 umpire books in my amazon wish list cue. Here is hoping I can get some... Oh and add to that all the Roder books.

I have to agree that this would not happen in a HS game and NEVER happen in a college game. Not without better reason than "I dont like you". Because that is going in the report and the AD and who ever else gets to see that report will want to know why that quote is in said legal document. As for the coach no longer being incharge. If he wants to pull his kids off the field thats his choice. He is still "the head coach". If the AC wants to step in and take over and not allow the kids to be pulled then so be it... but most ACs dont have the balls to do it because they are all friends so I say go ahead and walk off the field, change out of your gear, find a restaurant to eat at and have a good laugh at this moron. Trust me... Im pre-med!

One thing I like about this board over others is that for the most part everyone is pretty civil. You usually wont find an argument on something between two people that involves more than gentle ribbing. I wish I could say the same for other places.

Best of luck Dave. Hope, Steve's son and all the rest of our troops, thank you for your service and please make it home safe.

Does it count if I have seen them before? Chris, I will keep an eye out this year in the Portland area and report back to you how many I see.
-
thats a nice looking GD stance. Only thing I would say ump_24 would be that you need to be further back... and for gosh sakes... get some plate shoes!!!
-
Ok. well I will keep you posted on my shoes situation after the holidays (looking for umpire gift certificates in those packages under the tree). However, if you find a buyer before I let you know, then go for it. I dont want to be the one you held onto them for because I have a feeling I wear either an 11.5 or a 12. I need to stop at Honigs while I am in SoCal this week and try on the shoes.

And in Texas, thats close enough.:2cents:

Boy, Warren really accept anyone. LOL just kidding.

What is the closest you've come to hanging it up?

I dont think there is any chance that Pete or any of the more "veteran" guys on here would step away from the boards or even the profession. When I decide to hang it up (hopefully not for many many many more years) I have full intention of moving to the evaluation side of things as well as the instruction side. I like to think that those that can't do it anymore will teach the rest of us what they know... and that goes for Pete and everyone else. -
Kevin, Just wondering how many times the shoes have been worn? Also are the 995s all black or is there some white on them?
-
Kevin, I might be interested in both pairs but I need to see what size I wear. Also wont be making any kind of move on shoes until at least mid january (see what I get from ol st nick first).

Thats the one thing that I was curious about was how do the umpires know when the time clock as expired? Is there going to be a buzzer going off like in a basketball game? And if so, I can only imagine the problems if that buzzer goes off, say, while the pitcher is winding up because someone forgot to turn it off or when a pitch is thrown and the batter is trying to hit it and the buzzer goes off. Just bad things happening in my head at that point. Anybody else on this? Especially those D1 guys and the guys that live in SEC territory. P.S. Why are they only going to do this during the post season tournament? Wouldnt it make sense to try it during the regular season to see if it works and say that there are plans to use it in the tournament if it does?

Its worth a try.

Pete, I am definitely guilty of this and would do it again. Im trying to move up and show I am important to the guys on the board and the assignors and such. So yeh, guilty as charged. We were just asked for advice... and I gave some. What I will say is this. Find someone to bounce the idea off of. For instance I have my lovely wife as the rational one in the family. If I get a phone call or an email I will ask her what she thinks. 99 times out of 100 we both will say take the game. However that one time where one of us will say "bad idea" helps a lot. JMOMHO (Just More Of My Honest Opinion) -
Interesting... Kevin brought up something that I think most of us forgot in our lists and that is rule books, case books, and other umpire stuff.

Durwood was great. I got the chance to see him in action at an Oakland A's game about 3 years before his untimely passing. Was about 5 or 6 rows directly back of HP. Durwood had the stick and in between innings was giving lip right back to the guys in row 4. It was AWESOME!

I too thankfully added this to my list thanks to SWMBO. I did love the book but I found some of Mr. Weber's writing style a little tough. He seemed to jump all over the place and some of the words he was using were a little past me... but I guess thats what a dictionary is for right?

I have to agree. Its a little bit of an assualt on the eyes for those that are used to the more muted colors of the old site.

Another question is, where are you located? While I personally prefer Ump-Attire as Warren has suggested, there are quite a few umpire equipment retailers throughout the country. For example, Gerry Davis is located in Appleton, WI. Honigs has many retail stores such as College Station, TX and Santa Fe Springs, CA as well as Salem, OR and many others (they are based out of Michigan). Also some places have local sellers. You just have to ask around. Oh, one more thing I would take a look at if I were you are combo packages. Most companies have them and it usually gets you the equipment and such at a bit of a discount. Usually around 10% or so.
