That’s 2 of the 3 primary gripes about the Cobalt, removed (by you). 1- The attachment of the extension (lower plate) was designed correctly, but was executed incorrectly. As a consequence, the flank ends jut out awkwardly, and the whole point of wearing a snug-fitting, low profile CP is defeated. 2- The mold form used for the ailette (gap plate) is much too tall. Unlike companies such as Schutt-Adams, Riddell, Cooper, Warrior, and Wilson, which make (or made) shoulder pads for football, hockey, and lacrosse, All-Star is wholly bat-sport, and doesn’t have a shoulder pads unit to borrow a plate mold from. Douglas doesn’t have this problem, because Douglas also makes football pads, and they are all made domestically – they can just “whip something up” fairly easily. As such, All-Star (likely) used a mold from a set of shinguards. Force3 did the same thing on their UnEqual. The third most annoying part of a Cobalt is the use and location of the Side Release Buckles (SRBs). While much more civilized than crude T-hooks, SRBs are prone to breaking, and are a pain to replace. G-hooks are much, much kinder and more effective, and are virtually break-proof. And, the Cobalt is already rigged-up to accept G-hooks! Ya just need to remove both parts of the SRB (the female “block” side needs to be chipped or cut out without damaging the strap), and you’ll discover that the strap is set up to receive a G-hook. G-hooks can’t do it alone, they need a tri-glide partnered with them. 1 1 Quote

Oh sorry about that. It's the DX platform being used to test a more economical foam and some textiles for other projects in development. Unlikely to get released as an actual DX model and if it does it will be a limited one-time run. It is our 30th anniversary coming up after all so there's a chance it makes short appearance. 2 2 Quote
johnnyg08 Posted July 5, 2025 Author Report Posted July 5, 2025 Good news! I picked up some tri-glides and that seemed to have fixed my issue! Thanks everyone! 3 Quote

I have an brand new/unused one as a backup to my primary S7, and I'm wondering if I should sell it and get the Enduro. I'm VERY happy with the S7. I have the 15" S7 CP and would like to trade it for the 12" model. The 15" is too big for me. Quote

Go Navy Beat Army Posted July 14, 2025 Report Posted July 14, 2025 Just figured I'd add more positive feedback after having the D30 prove itself once again. Foul ball to the shoulder in a high school summer game. No pain or issues whatsoever. Thoroughly please.............still. 1 1 Quote

grayhawk Posted July 18, 2025 Report Posted July 18, 2025 Got my D3O this afternoon and got it adjusted to fit right. I would love to heat gun the plates so they are more form fitting, especially the pauldrons. Is this something that can be done with this material? Quote

Yes, the HDPE is pliable and you can use a hair drier or heat gun but make sure to remove all of the padding first. It is completely removable from all of the hard plates. High heat can damage the D3O. The plates are pre-shaped (not perfect but better than most) but over time they flatten with shipping and storage. Using heat should get them where you'd like. 3 Quote
TheLovejoy Posted July 19, 2025 Report Posted July 19, 2025 Wait, what? I did think the pauldrons might be a little too big and flat for my frame. So, pull the padding off, and heat them, and press them down to shoulders to lower the profile even further? Quote

You don’t have to be wearing the DX at the time, but yes… unfasten the padding and separate it from the plate, then using a heat gun or hair dryer, heat up the underside of each pauldron. Next, fold the “front” and “back” edges towards each other, and hold it until it cools off. Small bungee cords, or a webbing belt can be used to hold that curve for longer periods of time. 22 hours ago, DerekGDS said: High heat can damage the D3O. D3O is a remarkable material, but extreme heat and caustic chemicals (think: bleach) are its kryptonite. Kinetic energy is instantly converted to heat; then, the chemical composition of the material transfigures with that heat, and becomes more rigid. As the heat dissipates, the material relaxes. Extreme, applied heat can damage that characteristic. So too, I would be wary of using disinfectants – which often are mixed with caustic chemicals – on it. Bleach, Lysol, Simply Green, Scrubbing Bubbles are things to avoid – instead, use a clothing-safe spray like OdoBan or Febreeze. 1 1 Quote
