My first ej

Second Varsity game ever last night, I'm on the bases. Visting team has a history of getting into it with umpires, so I hear. A few close calls have gone against them from me this game and they're not happy. Between innings while I'm getting water at the fence, the benchwarmers come jogging by to warm up, and I hear a "You suck." I turn around and one of the kids jogging is looking right at me. #9 you're gone. "What??? I wasn't even talking to you!!!!" Later I get the most stone faced, expressionless apology from VTHC who "promises it won't happen again." Lol.

Ohio is 2 game minimum (not counting the current game) for EJ.

He's way more experienced than me and said he'd take care of it. I asked if he wanted me to do anything and he said no. I haven't gotten a phone call or anything from my assigner.

In PA, the ejecting official files an on-line report with PIAA, the state association. The other thing we typically do is call the assigner after the game, informing him/her about the EJ; we follow up with an email if requested.

Scissors, I suggest finding out what is the process in VA, for next time (and there will be a next time, sooner or later!): how are the state and the school informed of the EJ so that the appropriate penalties can be imposed?

This is a good recommendation.  Although, I've worked with very senior umpires (not necessarily good, just senior) who had never filed an EJ report and had no idea how to do so.

In OH, we file it online with OHSAA via a form.  We normally call our assignor and the AD for the offending school as well. 

Something I've learned, keep it short and sweet.  They don't want a police report here, but just the bare facts.  Example: OC arguing balls & strikes.  Warned in 1st inning. Restricted to bench in 3rd inning.  EJ in 5th inning for continuing to argue balls & strikes. 

Good job for doing it right though!  I'm glad you didn't just let it slide as many would have done.  These kids/coaches/parents have to learn that it is not okay to jaw at any official.

Great advice. Counterintuitive as it may be, less words often creates less confusion.

So things to remember for your report and which you or have your partner write down for when you are completing the paperwork after the game:

Inning, score at the time, number of outs and if needed and part of the situation, count and runner position.

Who was ejected and why. Warning issued, if any and when, especially when it comes to arguing balls and strikes (verbal in the 1st, written and restriction in the 3rd, ejection in the 4th, etc...)

Additional issues after ejection such as continued arguing, refusing to leave, more people becoming involved, so on and so forth.

 

Our association pretty much has the CIF EJ report on our web site. If we have an EJ, we call/text the assistant IC and then complete the form on line. The association forwards the report to CIF directly from there. As stated, this should be just factual; short and sweet.

Your EJ sounds fine to me. No way a player is getting a warning for that. Sucks the coach sounds like a duchy kind of guy. They set the tone, so this is just as much on them. Hope this was his closer...

Hmm, so much for that “experience.”

Besides, let’s say he did. He’s telling your story/version. What if he’s wrong, ad libs, editorialized too much? You’re the subject of that report - make sure you’re controlling it.

Here's why I said what I said in my comment above...if you are ejecting someone for a comment that they are directing at you, and you have to turn around to find out who said it, I'm going to have the question of "How do you know it was meant for you?" I'm not saying that the OP's ejection isn't valid (nor am I asking them to justify it here,) but being able to articulate the facts going into it without leaving out key points is paramount in a report.

Short and sweet is ok, but don't sanitize. For example, if obscenities were uttered, we are instructed to report them verbatim.

If somebody is saying something behind my back, I'm going to turn around and say, "I'm sorry, I didn't catch that. What can I do for you?" Most of the times it will comeback as a "nothing" occasionally they are dumb enough to repeat it, at which time they would get tossed instantly. 

Here in Oregon, we are told, for HS ball, to write down everything verbatim. What he called you, what you called him, what he did, etc. These then go thru our association to the OSAA, where they work with the association to come up with a penalty. The state is usually more lenient than the association would like.

And we wonder why the bad behavior continues and we can’t recruit young/new officials?  Without overusing  a now common tern it’s a pandemic. It’s up to US to change the culture.

I'm not going anywhere, but I see how it could make someone not want to continue. Seems like there's a lot of experienced guys who don't really care about the game. He didn't back me up on the field when I got into some heat and I could see him and the HC talking between innings and looking at me. Never understood it. We need to have each other's backs out there.

Lesson for everyone here.  If you eject, you report.  Assigner at the minimum, might include a UIC, commissioner, sanctioning body, and/or HS state association as appropriate.  I have worked high school in 4 states, 2 of them assigners isn’t enough, you file with the sanctioning body, 2 of them you had to go through assigner who sent it to state association.
