And what would NFHS have to say about it? I believe they don't mind states modifying their rules in a non playing rule manner but I think they can vote to exclude a state from the rules committee for modifying playing rules. I don't know if they took action against Florida for their DH mod.

I don't see FED having the backbone to do anything.    No less than this BoT weaseling their own rules, and then throwing the umpire crew right under the bus.  And then backing up the bus for a second run-over.

So GHSA's trustees overturned a judgement call made by the crew. The basis of this was a video shot by a parent. I see several problems with this.

 

GHSA doesn't accept protests.

 

FED rules do not allow video to be used to overturn a call.

 

Judgement calls cannot be protested in the first place.

 

They also sent a clear message that they do not stand by their officials. I think I would no longer be affiliated if I were down there.

My association has a season ending meeting in June after the playoffs. I have a feeling that this is going to come up at some point in our meeting.

Here is our updated report:  Dangerous Precedent - GHSA Overturns Judgment Call 

Included in it are:
1) A background into the GHSA, which is a troubled organization that just in February saw not one but two bills come before the Georgia legislature proposing that the state replace the GHSA with a new statewide governing body. One GA state rep said he gets more complaints about the GHSA "than about everything else put together." Furthermore, there is an apparent feud between GHSA Executive Director Phillips (who originally denied Johns Creek based on "judgment call") and Board of Trustees President White (who voted to overturn the judgment call). In February, White voted to recommend that Phillips resign.
2) A list of legal precedent where courts have historically stated it is not legally proper for a non-on-field person to overturn an on-field judgment call.
3) OBR vs NFHS protest procedure, showing how ill-equipped GHSA was to handle a protest due to a lack of written procedures.

So it sounds like the coach from JC was going to get what he wanted (and likely knew it) by playing off the existing feud between Phillips and White.    So much for "doing the right thing".

In other news, the GHSA has awarded Andres Gallaraga a perfect game.

From what I have read John's Creek didn't want to go into the finals with people questioning if they should be there.  They wanted game three as much as Lee did. The video is compelling and the reason Lee said it didn't matter is also compelling, according to Lee's coach

the HP umpire yelled "ballgame"...while he thinks his player touched third he's saying it shouldn't have mattered.

 

We had a thread here recently where this "mechanic"of calling "ballgame" was discussed -- here's one good reason not to do it.

While very easy to say, I don't think it's fair or realistic to expect that to happen. People have been waiting their whole lives for that assignment, with a LONG line of people ready to take their place if they stand down. All they'd accomplish would be to blackball themselves forever, lose public support (such that it exists in the first place), and be open to arguments - no matter how specious - that they're just closing ranks and hurting kids who had nothing to do with the decision.

Now, if I'm called to do the makeup Game 3 just added, however....huh, my schedule seems to have been full. Oh well..

Yeah, I agree;  it could end up like another MLB union debacle like in 1999.  But the treatment those umpires got from the GHSA..... it sucks big time.

This from a coach who attempted an appeal using the wrong rule set.   Or if he did know that it was supposed to be NFHS, then he knowingly and with intent attempted to use the wrong rule book in an attempt to fool the GHSA.   

So he wants to, instead, allow the video:   here's a screen grab of the video, at the critical moment.   Touch?  No touch?   Yep, it's as clear as a bell.
