Question

I realize these are judgment calls but I would be curious to read what criteria or what umpires look for in the following situations:

1. When to rule a check swing a check swing a strike. (Naturally I have heard the bat crossing the front of the plate or the batter breaking his wrist phrases but what do the men in blue say?)

2.When to rule an unexecuted bunt an offering at the pitch.

Or is it simply, "I know it when I see it."

NCAA and FED use something to the term of 'barrel of the bat crossing the batter's front hip' rather than 'front of the plate' since the batter's hip moves with him up and back in the box. Thisnis merely designed as an aid in deciding whether or not a batter legitimately offered at the pitch

"Breaking the wrist" is never a criterion.

Passing the plate (or front hip) (usually) means it *is* a swing.  It still can be one even if it doesn't pass.  (And, "usually" because you can have a batter twist out of the way of a pitch and carry the bat past the plate -- this is *not* a swing)

#1 is well covered.  On a bunt, I am looking for the batter guiding the bat towards the ball as the ball reaches him.  If he does this, it's an attempt even if he pulls the bat back at the last instant.

to pick up on Question 1)

Go to :34 mark - swing or no swing?

I would not have a strike.  Batter did not rotate his hips enough into the pitch and the bat was still back as the ball passed through the back of the hitting zone.  Did not feel like an attempt to strike the ball.  Very close though.  I would have no argument with a strike call.

I'm not good enough to be watching the hips all the way from A

Was the bat still moving forward as the pitch passed?

If the batter breaks his wrist, he probably needs a cast.  If he has a cast, he probably isn't batting.........:sarcasm:

Stop man, you're killing my sides.

Pulling the bat back doesn't erase an attempt.

I think you and Ives are picturing different actions.

I think you have in mind an offer and the batter pulling the bat back as F2 catches the pitch to try to fool the umpire.

I think Ives is thinking of a batter squaring to bunt, not offering, and pulling the bat back as the pitch arrives.

If all that's right, you two are not disagreeing.

I thought I made it clear in my first post that the batter had offered prior to pulling the bat back.
