Umpires are always designated based on position.

PU

PU and BU

PU, U1, and U3

PU, U1, U2, and U3

PU, U1, U2, U3, ULF, URF

Unless you are using the FED manual. As with their runner designations, they are screwed up and start with PU being U1.

What is meant by "deep B?" Are we just setting up a bit deeper in B or are we in softball B behind the fielders. I'm not familiar with 60' mechanics. Do enlighten.

Deep "B" simply means back from the normal "B" position. The reasoning is you're out of the way of the drawn in  MI's. Not sure if it's a FED thing, or just a New Jersey thing, but here in this sometimes backwards state (as far as things like mechanics and uniform colors go), they want us in deep "B" whenever the infield is in.

... which is pretty asinine, and defiant in that they won't adapt. You really have to be drinking the Fed Kool-Aid if you can't see beyond the *ahem* "manual" and understand that there is an entire, bigger baseball world out there... that's been using established jargon for a long time.

Note: I'm not saying that you, @Jimurray, are drinking said Kool-Aid.

The people that are are serving the koolaid have not adjusted completely but I think their manual has improved.

Deep B is a 3-man position on 90' fields as well. It is done even when the infielders aren't playing in.

Would you ever be in "regular B" in 3-man?

I also was told in 3-man if there are two outs regardless of the runners U2 will move to A.

That's the current standard in all (?) normal mechanics sets.

R2 is unlikely to steal with two outs, and a play in the infield is likely to go to first.  The chances of a play at third are pretty low.  (You need to combine that, of course, with the importance of the call and the likelihood of getting it right / wrong from the various starting points, so I agree it's not a "no brainer," but it is what is used.  NCAA had U1 NOT moving back to first up until a couple of years ago.)

However, with R2 (only... or R2+R3), 2B cannot be unattended. So, with 2 outs directing U1 to return to A, then U3 must go to C.

If there is 1 out, with R2 / R2+R3, and with something like, say, a strikeout as the 2nd out, and the U3 goes catatonic, or gets caught in a daydream, or is involved in a discussion with 3BC, and you (as U1) can't seem to hail him to remind him it's now 2 outs and you're headed back to A... Don't call time so as to "wake him up". It won't kill you to stay at B for a pitch or two*, as it is more important that someone is on-hand to see a pickoff attempt at 2B than U1 being in A – U1 can still make the call at 1B from B, just as he would in 2-man.

* - by now, the PU has snapped U3 from his stupor, or had F2 throw at him. If he's still in la-la-land, use that plate brush or indicator in your pocket to throw at him. Once you get his attention, use the "get your a$$ over here" mechanic.

I'll work a deep B with R3 only and two outs if I can determine that F5 is not going to hold the runner  or attempt a play. I've found that the younger the age, the more likely the F5 is going to attempt a play, so I don't do it.

Thank you for the rhetorical answer.

Why did you need to ask the rhetorical question?
