You're referring to the comment/note under rule 6.01(h)(2)? If the catcher is not in possession of the ball, nor in the act of fielding the ball, nor is there a play being made on the runner at the plate and the catcher is blocking the pathway of the runner scoring, then yes there would be obstruction. You'd hardly need to call it though. You'd have other issues.

Plays at the plate are carved out with the rule with the specific reason that they are to be treated differently than obstruction/interference. In professional baseball, if there is a catcher violation of the home plate collision rule you don't point and call 'obstruction' because it is not obstruction. It is a violation of the home plate collision rule. If the runner violates, it's not interference, it is a violation of the rule. The rule was designed to protect catchers. In order to protect catchers you have to give an incentive to the runner to slide. Collisions are still a legal possibility under the rule. If the catcher violates the rule, the runner is still well within his rights to maintain their path to the plate, and if a collision occurs it is legal. The runner has responsibilities under the rule too, e.g. can't initiate avoidable contact, or change his pathway for the purpose of colliding with the catcher, or it will be a violation on the part of the runner. However, if contact occurs because the catcher is blocking the lane, it is legal. The point of the rule (and it is is doing exactly what it was designed to do) is to minimize those collisions. As a runner, you know that if your pathway is blocked, and you slide, you will be safe. If you don't slide and collide with the catcher, you MIGHT be out (if the catcher holds on to the ball). So, what do you do as a runner? The smart move, and what professional players are taught to do now, is to make a legal slide, let the umpire call the violation, and score the run.

Catcher violation can't be called if the runner doesn't slide. Also, a throw coming from a drawn in infield is just one example of a play that is carved out as an exception because the catcher doesn't have time to move into position. Other examples given in the rule are double steal plays, throw coming from a pitcher, quick developing play after a passed ball/wild pitch.

Yea - the LUCs were lighter but they're only so big because they compress so easy. I feel like the two-tone pads I have on it protect better, and look better.

They are a lighter material than the Smitty, and they fit WAY better in the thigh and knee. Smitty's feel like parachute pants. With the Davis, the look and feel is just way better. I don't know about being worth the price (at $90) but with the 10% discount that almost every association in the country has, they are good for the money - especially if you work at a level that you are graded on appearance.

I don't think he's wanting to start doing it regularly but my point is that if you know someone who does tig welding (and does it well) it's possible - and doesn't have to cost you $250!

I use a Rawlings Ti, and had 2 welds break on a foul ball last month. I talked to Tony at Mask-It and he unfortunately said he couldn't weld it and that it would cost me upwards of $250 to repair it properly. I figured I was out of luck, but talked to my brother who does some tig welding, and while not perfect he was able to fix the welds. There was some minor brown-blue contamination, which realistcally won't affect the strength of the mask significantly. And if the welds break again, well, I was out a $200 mask anyway before the repair. I understand a professional shop not willing to take on a job like this - They don't want to attach their name to something if they're not 100% and cant do it without contamination. But, my brother is an engineer, not a welder - if he can do it this well on a first try, I'm sure it can be done even better in the future. I'm happy with the results- looks pretty good after buffing off the top layer.

I don't know what to tell you if you don't believe the brooks baseball graphic. They're pretty accurate. Remember, the camera is coming from 30 feet up in the air, 400 feet away, and not centered. You can't trust the graphics on the screen. Regardless, it is much closer than you claim, and too close to take if you just got done showing up the umpire.

Yea the welds are off a bit, so one side extends further down than the other. The frame itself isn't bent, it's just not symmetrical.

Just turned my mask from little league into a respectable backup Before Melted off the rubber coating After some sanding and chopping off the throat guard. Pretty easy process, got a paint and primer in 1 spray paint. I will hold onto it as a backup, hope my new Rawlings Ti holds up and this never has to see the field. Just ordered a new pair of team Wendy pads, so I'll rotate my old pair onto this mask, and add a hanging throat guard.
