He's a pretty competent umpire, for the most part. Just like 90% of the guys I end up working with, he's not a mechanics guru or anything but he signals, communicates and rotates well. I don't think you'll need any warnings haha but you might work with him in the future. It would have been nice to have his help, but I hardly ever go to help on a tag or pulled foot when in the A position. Thinking over the play - I would say one thing I would change about my positioning was not be so close. I was really committed to get to 90, but I cut in too close to get there. It caused a bit of tunnel vision. If I had been further away I might have been able to judge where the glove was in relation to the fielders body and runner, and made a more informed call.

Yep I will be there - That would be awesome if you could do that. If not, last year the Springfield clinic had some Honigs guys there, and they were able to bring items guys expressed interest in. Haven't heard anything about that at this clinic though.

Somehow they didn't collide - the first baseman kept good body control and the runner did it right, staying on the foul side of the bag. This was an NAIA school was playing a HS prospect team - players were good. On your 2nd point, it was obvious to everyone he didn't come down on the bag and he said "on the tag?" as he was walking out of the dugout. I just figured I'd save the time since I thought my partner might have some pertinent info for the tag. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk

I will try to explain this best I can - I am the Base Umpire in 2-man; 0 Out, No runners, Bottom of 9th, game is tied 6-6 Chopper hit to the third baseman, throw is high. Right handed First baseman leaps straight up, catches the ball. He comes down with his back turned to me, and straddles the base, not touching it. The batter runner then strides over the bag, missing first. I was about 90 degrees from the throw, I took a quick double read step to the left, but I still could not see the glove because of the way the first baseman came down on the bag - I tried to listen for a tag but did not hear anything. I signaled safe, and was prepared for an appeal that he missed first, but the BR quickly came back to touch first. Coach started walking from the dugout, and I knew immediately that I didn't have a good view of the tag so I told him I'd get help - My partner got screened by the catcher. So no help. I'm about 50/50 on this play - I think he maybe got the tag on him, but it was such a 3rd world play. The coach in the 1st base dugout had a much better look than me, and he was sure I missed the tag. Any thoughts?

Cant watch the video at the moment, but it would probably be an out on: a) the catch, or b) spectator interference. edit: @grayhawk is right, it wouldn't be spectator interference.

I had the same experience with my lightweight diamond, and TW pads. Took a shot in the chin and it just killed my jaw for a few days. Hope I run into someone that has it - I'd like to feel it before I buy it. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk

Follow up question -Say R3 comes around and misses the plate - walks to the dugout and the on deck batter tells him to touch the plate. How far can the runner get before losing the right to touch? The abandonment rule in NCAA reads "reasonable distance" , but this isn't an abandonment issue I don't think.

R3, 2 outs. Passed Ball, R3 comes home to score, but misses the plate (by a mile). Defense HC yells he missed the plate. Catcher steps on home, obvious appeal. My question: What if R3 is trying to retouch home? At what point is he liable to be out on appeal (Catcher simply tagging the plate with the ball) and when does the runner need to be tagged with the ball?

Very nice legal disclaimer at the end there, Dave. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk

After a year and a half, anyone have any firsthand experience with this mask?

Loosen the top middle, so that the harness sits lower on the back of your head - then tighten the sides just enough so that it doesn't slide forward. As @MadMax said - The All-Star "DeltaFlex" harness for masks is actually intended for catcher's helmets. It won't work very well with a hat.

Plenty of places need umpires - don't work for someone that treats you like crap.

Had to walk past him in order to get to the gate - gate was beyond the 3rd base dugout, he was coaching 3rd. Yea, I stopped . . .to eject him. Only after he made a scene. I know you're not defending that chicken sh*t action of the coach, right? Games over and he thinks he has a license to start arguing balls and strikes. Sorry, no umpire should put up with that at the HS level - whether you're walking off the field or if you're waiting for your partner, it doesn't matter. The game is over, participants should treat it that way.

Relatively easy ejection last week - game is over, and all of a sudden the losing coach feels entitled to argue about my zone. Get out of here, sit in the bus for the JV game. Funny/irritating moments from this game. 1st inning, F2 - "so what are you going to give us, for your zone" Me - "if it's a strike, I'll call it a strike, how about that" F2 - "come on man, we're friends, that's how this works." I just shook my head, no idea what was going through this kids head. Sometime in the middle of the game, the coach asks me to speed up my strike call. Apparently my timing was throwing him off. Sorry coach, no can do. You'd like it a lot less if I started missing pitches.

If the balk occurs, it can't also be CI can it? CI is enforced if the batter, does not advance to at least first base. A balk is enforced if the batter and all runners do not advance at least one base (with the exception of an overthrow or WP; 6.02 AR) In this case, the batter does not advance - so the CI award would be B1 to 1st, all other runners return TOP. The balk award would be no pitch, and R3 advances home. Would the balk nullify the CI since it is a delayed dead ball? If you enforce the CI, then the Batter has advanced but the runner hasn't. If you enforce the Balk, then the runner advances but the batter doesn't. Which supersedes the other? I feel like I'm going in circles thinking about CI and Balk on the same play. The batter has to make a reasonable effort to vacate the area around home for a play on a runner at home, otherwise it's batter interference. I think intent would govern both of these situations.

I've always been pretty happy with Brewers announcers - Brian Anderson and Bill Schroeder are pretty knowledgeable, Brian Anderson is a national guy and misses quite a few games for TBS, but overall the FS-WI crew is good. And of course on radio, we get Mr. Baseball Harry Doyle.. I mean Bob Uecker. And then I watch Cardinal games on FS-MW and just wow, their announcers are terrible.

He doesn't have to, but he could be put out on an appeal if he doesn't.
-
Right, thanks for the clarification

If he was past 2nd at the TOT: OBR - He may complete his base running responsibilities, touch 2nd, touch 1st, touch 2nd, end at 3rd during a dead ball Fed - He may not legally retouch first - he still can, but he'd be liable to be put out on appeal If he was between 1st and 2nd at the TOT: All codes - If he goes past 2nd before retouching first, he can no longer legally touch 1st.
-
He gets an opportunity to complete his baserunning responsibilities on a ball thrown out of play. If he doesn't retouch 1st, he is liable to be put out on appeal. In OBR, the defense needs to put the ball in play before making an appeal. I can't recall whether the ball thrown out of play would constitute an appeal attempt for the purpose of making multiple appeals, but I don't think in this case it does.

What things do you cover with new or inexperienced guys in your pregame? I feel like I overwhelm some guys when I talk about rotations, fly coverages etc. Question is for 2 man crew. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk
