Getting Dressed at the field

Do you like getting dressed at the field (parking lot) or do you like getting dressed before you leave for the field, by getting dressed I mean uniform,  slacks, under garments, ect

 

I know when I first started in 1999 you came dressed to the field, now,  I see umpires that come to the field and get dressed out in the Parking Lot, last year was the first year that I got dressed at the field think I'll stick with that.

 

What are your thoughts????

I usually get on my undergarments at home, and then put on the uniform in the parking lot. I never get my slacks and shirt on at home.

Ive only umpired at one Park this year that had a room for me to get dressed in and I thought that was neat felt like a big league umpire.

I never dress before getting in the truck. I dress when I am at the site, whether it be parking lot or locker room.

Other than sports underwear I do all of the gear once I am in the lot. Often I am going from my kids game to a game I am officiating and don't relish sitting in the stands in slacks and other uniform attire.

Most of my non-HS games we have locker rooms.

For the games I do not have a locker room I use one of these.

For me, there are never any locker rooms open for umpires at the high schools or local parks. So all preparation is done at your vehicle.

 

I would guess that 90% of the umpires I have worked with drive to the parking lot with their ump pants already on. Some have their shirts and shoes already on as well. And there's something unappealing about skin exposure at 40 degree temps with the wind blowing at 20 mph, so if you have the bases that day, you get ready at home.

Why don't your associations fight to get you dressing facilities? Football referees have a dressing room why not baseball umpires???

 

The last meeting I had with our area athletic directors I told them they had to provide dressing rooms even if that meant the umpires needed to drive to the field from the school. I brought up the fact that there are security cameras in parking lots, sue happy parents, school age kids in the parking lot all with grown men in various stages of undress. I told them I didn't want an umpire ending up on a sex offender list.

 

You know what? All but 1 or 2 of our schools provided dressing rooms last year and I'm getting ready to address it with the schools who didn't.

That's the invention of our very own member @ChrisHickman. In case some of you didn't know.

@MidAmUmp. Who's afraid of a stinkin' bunch of lawyers? Not me. Thats for sure. That being said. My hats off to you for taking that stand for your umpires. Can you do that for us in the summer too? I got strip stark butt ass naked at Liberty HS the past two years working for you in this MF'n hot Kansas summer weather. Took bottle showers between my vehicle and my partners to rinse the funk off after plate jobs. Do it several other places too: FreeState HS, Mid-America Complex, Lawrence HS, 3 and 2, Baker U, Park U, Avila U, MO Western U. I don't make a show of it but I do strip down and get the wet stuff off before I drive home an hour to as many as three or four hours. Dress in freakin' lawn mower garages at Graceland U and Peru State College. Get to dress in front of Pancho or whatever his name is at Sedalia Bombers in the summer. At least it's air conditioned in there. Even though it's dirty and the toilet doesn't flush, ever.

Not bitching. Promise. Just sharing the conditions we endure to chase that dream. Lots of great memories and stories. When I catch a complaint or some handcuffs I might get Chris' locker room. Or I might use your arguments to try and force schools to provide us a place to dress. I'm not modest though. It is a real problem. We should all start demanding that our assigners and associations negotiate this with the schools we work for.

So not only do you need to get to the ADs to make this happen, you need to get to the umpires (whether by fiat or buy-in)

Since i leave from my place of work for almost 80 % of my games , I dress at game site.......

 

weekends, I go semi dressed.....undergarments, pants, t-shirt.....shoes......then gear up for the game at site.......

That happens to me as well...every time I place my nutty buddy into my jock strap a grandma walks by my car and pretends not to look. If she smiles, I'm not sure if that's good or bad (I've never had the courage to ask). Then the girls tennis team goes by as well. I'm gonna wind up on u-tube one of these days.
