All ....

Well, we're discussing equipment and what you'd like Santa to bring you, but ......let's look elsewhere and focus on what your personal POI's will be for the 2015 season, regardless of what they are.  You can list as many or as few as you wish, but let's get them out there and maybe we can all help each other achieve them!

I'll start...

1) As with most seasons, I want to strive to be more consistent behind the plate, so tracking the ball must be a focus.

2) Proper footwork in the field, working smarter, not necessarily harder

3) Continuing focus on proper positioning on plays at the plate.  It really started to come together this past season, and I want to continue this trend.

4) Overall improvement of rules knowledge (quick on your feet style without thinking)... I know this takes time, but ....no time like the present.

GO!

1. Lose more weight

2. Try to focus better later in the games

3. Footwork on the base

Wow, Thunderheads could have been answering this question for me. Personal improvement as an umpire is in my mind all the time. Maybe the only thing I'd add to Thunderheads' list is trying to maintain focus every moment of play during the long days I work.

:)  I should add "long day focus" because I had a pretty bad miss at first because I got lazy last Summer and it was horrible .... didn't make a difference in the game, but ...it was horrible nonetheless.

ALWAYS focus,... don't get lazy, ... it'll bite ya!

1. I want to be more consistent on the plate. Still searching for the perfect game on the dish.

2. Lose more weight. My goal of getting to 200 lbs needs to happen.

3. Better rules knowledge. I want to be like @grayhawk.

4. Get better every game.

1) Timing behind the plate

2) continue to develop good rapport with coaches as I go into my 3rd year of HS by having more personable conversations - been too short, unapproachable, and perceptually arrogant bc I am young and wanted them to believe they were getting the best our association could offer them.

3) identifying the new guys that have the potential to make this a long avocation and encourage them to work the system and always get better. My favorite pre-game questions are 'what have you been doing well? ' and 'what are you going to work on today?'

Great topic.  Beats the hell out of a 10 page discussion on hat sizes of MLB umpires.

4. Pick up some varsity games.

Keep in mind the difference between what you can control and what you can't control. We can improve our skills, our fitness, our knowledge...we can't control our schedules, our evaluations, or anything that's in the hands of anyone else. By doing what we can, we can influence what others do for us in our careers, but we have to focus on ourselves and not worry about the other things.

1: Find an eager young umpire to mentor.

2: Come up with a firm plan for recruiting new umpires into our HS assc. We are losing a lot of our availability to college games, because we have trained our guys well enough that college associations are steadily increasing some of their schedules.

3: Update our Association Constitution and Rules of Conduct, in conjunction with our board.

4: Spend more time evaluating our crews.

5: Work games, be consistent, and have fun doing so.

Find an eager young umpire to mentor is what all of us old guys should.

1. Better tracking. (less head movement).

2. Timing still needs to slow down.

This should result in the consistency on balls and strikes I'm looking for.

3. Drop a few pounds, get in better shape.

4. Continue to work getting the proper angles on the bases and plays at the plate. I was very happy with my progress in this area this year. Still there were times I know I could have been in better position. I want to get to the point where I don't feel that way after any  game.

@Richvee  - I was paging through my brand new "Maximizing..." and the very 1st thing that caught my eye was (paraphrasing) "The base umpires #1 priority is to get into the best position for the next call"...and merzel was really stressing that on the eval videos..I know i try to get in the best position but seeing in bold AND italics emphasizes the importance of always thinking about it
