I detect a Jock Sniffer in our midst.

Big, crazy called K3s will assure your status as a parks and rec umpire forever (said like the kids in The Sandlot- For-evvvvvverrrrrrrrr!)

This field is 30 minutes from me. The article was posted in our paper. He is a HS umpire, but this is an adult league where he makes it fun for all. Said the players love him for making it loose. He also quoted as saying he would never do this at the HS level, but rather games like this where the league also has fun with it. If everybody is fine with it, by all means, it's a game, lighten up everyone. Its supposed to be fun!

I still think it is showing up the players no matter what level. You are entitled to your opinion but there are guys with high level experience and a lot of years telling you different.

And when you get paid 6 figures to umpire like the Pros, you can do whatever mechanic you want on strike 3.

I like it fun and loose too, but that is still ridiculous.

If he did that SH*# here in our men's league he would only get to do it once.

@soapbox

Where is this? What is name of paper there or post us a link to the article. Thanks.

All it will take is one controversial call for all of the theatrics to come back and bite him in the butt.

I am of the opinion that the umpires should remain invisible to the maximum extent possible.

This is not the case.

If he's doing it in a league where everyone is ok with it and is there for fun i have less of a problem with it but still don't like it

I wouldn't do it, but I bet the fans love him.  Baseball can be void of entertainment to the casual fan, so anything to liven things up is likely met with great enthusiasm.

www.nj.com When I coached, one assigner had a crew that had fun. Not like this guy, but not the by the book mechanic. Never bothered us. To the contrary, we enjoyed it. Again, it's a game. I don't ump in the pros, and very few kids are playing past HS. In the right environment, I see no problem.

If he did that around here in men's league, he'd likely catch an untouched fastball with his grill.

There is only one problem with that statement: There's no way in hell that anyone who would pull a stunt like that would work in the men's league here.

This is the kinda antics that give umpires a bad name and lack of respect!

People may in fact think is funny and laugh but he loses all credibility!

Saw an umpire in a 14U world series tournament this past weekend performing (IMO) a ridiculous over the top strike three mechanic. The really bad part is that he did it on all swinging strikeouts'.

He's welcome to his own opinion and I appreciate that.....maybe he is right that "everybody" is ok with it..........but I'd equate it to having a pet rattlesnake......eventually you are going to get bit....In the adult baseball work I am around, everyone would NOT be appreciative of the act.........

On a personal note, I work too hard on my game to find this acceptable.......we all fight negative umpire stereotypes every game......and to be considered like that entertaining funny umpire who runs around making up funny statements just doesnt work for me......

So the catcher in my college summer league talked to me about this tonite.

He said that if he had this umpire sticking strike three up everybody's a**, the umpire would likely get some sort of field justice from the players in the league. Can't say that I would argue with that.

I've worked with this guy...there is one in every association!  Mustard on the hot dog!!!

The more and more I watch the video and see the lack of reaction from the players, part of me thinks that this was completely staged.

Umpire to coaches:  "Hey guys, I'm trying to get a funny video on YouTube to go viral.... I'm going to go completely Bat-SH*# Crazy on a couple of called strike 3's so please let your players know that it's nothing against them"

We could only hope.....

and I would be happy to admit being taken in by Hook, line and sinker.......

I got turned off of using the the "big ol' strike 3 mechanic" many years ago........I cringe today when I see an umpire breaking his back hallion style at a kid game......everybody knows the kid struck out, the kid knows it, his mom knows it, his teammates know it, heck, even the hot dog vendor knows it..........I've never thought it necesarry to overly rub salt in the wound and make myself look foolish in the process......

just my .02.......
