The FED strike mechanic is made while facing the field of play. I would caution any PU that is turning to the side to give a strike call to be sure your timing is giving you the best opportunity to see dropped 3rd strikes and batter interference. With the new FED rule pertaining to controlling the backswing, IMO the PU needs to be looking forward to see this. I attended a HS game last night where both of these occurrences were missed while the PU turned away from the batter IMO "grandstanding" delivering strike 3 calls. The HC argued the no-calls and rightfully so. How do you explain to the HC why you didn't call it? Coach, I didn't see it...

Hello, My name is Greg, and I have been officiating for 6 years in the state of Georgia. Started in it the rec level and now call primarily in the HS and tournament levels. I decided to join the ranks after 14 years of coaching and seeing the need for quality umpires (having a runner called out for being outside the base path between 3B and home while the ball was rolling in center field may have been the icing on the cake). I follow the forums on this website and find it to be educating and often humorous. I was contemplating donning a plate coat until I read several posts on the subject!
