Question

Hi guys, just looking for some advice on what other people on here would do regarding a situation that occurred this past weekend.  I ejected a coach for excessive arguing.  Upon ejecting him I turned and walked away and my partner stepped in.  Here is where the question is.  When my partner is walking the coach off the field, he is yelling loudly about how he is going to meet me at my car and kick my ass and that if he ever sees me outside of an umpire's uniform that I am going to get what I deserve.  He continues yelling these threats until he is out of the complex.  My partner and I have notified the director and the UIC and they feel as if I have nothing to worry about and that the coach was just yelling in anger.  The league was a spring middle school league and has ended at this point.  So to the experts, what should my next step if any be?

That is why I always carry my phone. To many crazies out there! 911 press charges. Maybe he will learn a lesson!

It's a felony in Florida.

A middle school game?!? Are you freakin' kidding me? At a MINIMUM, details on the threats will be emailed to the head of the state association, his athletic director, and the assignor, to document the serious nature of a potential assault.

any threat should be instant call to 911 to at the very least have a police presence the rest of the game.....sure its probably just the coach yelling in anger, but do you really want to take the chance??

stop at the police station on your way home if you don't do any of the above.

I have a real problem with the league director and UIC not taking this seriously.  Regardless of whether they fear for your safety or not, there is no excuse for not treating this behavior in the most serious way possible.  I agree with the posts above - since it was a middle school game, his school should be made aware of it and know how seriously you take it.  The other thing that you could do for a next step is push back a bit on the UIC and League Director - tell them that you feel that more should be done in lieu of the threats OVER A MIDDLE SCHOOL GAME.

Jax, where do you carry your phone? Have you had to use it?   I've always thought carrying a phone is a no no even if it doesn't come out, but have often thought of carrying one for exactly what's been posted above.

IMHO not carrying a phone is a thing of the past. There are to many crazies out there!

I put it in my back pocket and it stays there till I need it.

And yes I called 911 once.

Edit: Some HS Games I will not have a phone. But it depends on the school and what part of town.

I would file a police report and request they investigate it to determine if charges are appropriate. If nothing else, with this chap having to speak to the cops will put him on notice that you and the next umpire crew are serious about safety, sportsmanship, and crossing the line into criminal behavior. Word will get around too. You can then take a copy of the report and send it to the appropriate persons that can take administrative action against this coach.

I never carry a phone in school games. I *always* carry one in non-school ones, for just this reason. Plus, many games have time limits. Just put it in my back pocket, the one on my Smitty pants that has a button.

I would find out who this DB reports to at the school. Call them and ask to meet with them at the school. Get your partner to write down EXACTLY what happened or what was said. When you meet with this person, explain what happened and give him the report from your partner. If the person the coach reports to wont meet with you, go over his head. Find someone in charge so that they know what's going on. This coach may not act on this threat, but you can never be too safe. IMO, this guy has no business being anywhere near a ball field or children.

As to the phone, I rarely carry mine. But I make sure that before I step on the field either myself or my partner has a phone. It stays off and out of sight, but it's there if we need it.

One place I never carry a phone because there is a complex announcer who has a radio to HQ. All others it goes in back pocket on silent only comes out for timed games to quickly check clock or if emergency services are needed.

This guy has no business in youth sports. The supervising body needs to suspend him for a year and see how he behaves after that.

A coach threatened me after a state tournament game a few years ago. I filed a report with the state (he was suspended) and with the local police (they took his statement). He was suspended by the state and moved to a different district.

I actually didn't get threatened by the coach, but just after I tossed him and he was gathering his stuff from the dugout and still chirping at me, I told him to hurry up and get going, as he was leaving he looked out at me and said "What's your address and I'll go take care of your old lady while I'm gone."

I carry my cellphone in my back pocket primarily to keep time on since most of the games I do have time limits, I don't use it and I only have it out long enough to check time, but we do have some umpires in our league that text or check scores or even get on twitter between innings.  Maybe I should get on UE and live post about my games.... :question1:

Ignore moronic comments about taking care of anyone. Thats my OFFICIAL word. UNOFFICIALLY:

"What's your address so I can go take care of your old lady?"

"I suggest you take care of your own house. I'm tired of having to listen to YOUR 'old lady' gripe about you between bl@w j@bs."

I try not to blame the victim, but you prompted his snide comment. I've seen guys argue, laugh contemptuously, and wave to ejected coaches. They were all way too invested in getting "the best" of him or some such.

You've ejected him, so he no longer exists. Do not address him further: nothing good will EVER come from doing so.

You do not need to have the last word (or: you had the last word, as he no longer exists). If he threatens you, take notes and address it after the game with the authorities.

If he has not complied with the rules by leaving the vicinity of the field in a satisfactory time, you will need to speak to the (new) head coach and have him address the problem.

@maven I agree, he was just taking his sweet time to leave the field.  Not that I'm mad about it, I just thought it was funny.  Told my wife about it later and she actually asked me if he was cute..... :smachhead:

WALK AWAY!

Nothing good will happen between you and the person you eject AFTER you dump him!

Maybe it saves StrikeToWin the effort. ;)
