Okay, I decided this probably could use its own thread. Hopefully there isn't a thread already about this. Tried searching with Tapatalk and nothing came up.

I was reading a different thread where some people mentioned announcing outs. In six years I have never once announced the outs unless asked by someone. The evaluators at the clinic I went to didn't mention it either. The games I do have a partner I don't notice most of them doing it, but two or three have. Is it customary to do so?

I do not announce the outs unless I am asked.

I signal outs to my partner(s).

I always announce outs, tell em balls in, go out to the mound and settle in and brief any new pitcher, and show them where 1B is when I call ball 4 with a point in the right direction.

I signal my partner. Tell F2 everytime theres an out recorded how many there are. After an F1 change I will remind him again. Anytime Im asked or anytime i perceive there's some confusion as to how many there are.

I announce the outs when there's been a delay in play, such as a pitching change, injury, weather, etc. I don't think it counts as "announcing", but will obviously answer when someone asks me how many are out.

For some strange reason, i'll hold out the "2 out" fingers to both sides.    I don't know why, it's just something I do.   Maybe i'm reminding myself and my partner that if there's an uncaught 3rd strike, it's not dead.   ??      I don't know.   I really can't explain it.

This is the coaches job.

I only do it when asked or as part of a rotation/coverage signal to my partner.  If someone has it wrong I will let them know the actual  number of outs.

I'm thinking someone's sarcasm detector is on the fritz :)

I'll announce if there's a delay, mention it quietly to F2 (and myself) every now and then, answer if asked, maybe say it at other times. It's not a big deal really, can't even say that I have a definite pattern.

I exchange the number of outs with my partner.  The rest have their own teammates to exchange info with!

If asked, I don't keep it a secret, of course.

(Oh, I can't resist...)

I do discuss pitch selection with F2, based on the number of outs, runners, if any, the count, the score, and what the batter has done in his past ABs.  If we don't agree, F2 and I call time and discuss it with F1.

If a bucket-sitting AC is giving signs to F2, both F2 and I watch the AC, we both nod, then we discuss the merits of that pitch, first.  We don't want the AC to feel left out.  I sometimes signal back to the AC on what we decided.  I've discussed all this at the plate meeting, so the AC will have heard from his HC on how my system works.  I've had no complaints.  My BU knows he has to watch everything else while I handle this pleasant pastime I've developed.

BTW, this cuts down on all nasty comments from the coaches.

But, sometimes, I run into a partner that wants to argue with about my "pastime" during our pregame and after the game.  I just tell him I've been doing this for 45 years, so I know much more about everything than he does.  Sometimes this results in my having to do games solo.  But that just adds to the fun!  Then, while I exchange pitch-selection info with the AC and F2, any activity on the field (balks, pickoffs, rundowns, fingers stuck in eyes, etc.) is handled by the players themselves, on the honor system.  I just ask them what the result was.

Then, I tell everyone the number of outs.

Indicate outs (to the side) between partner(s) silently... Wait to answer or re-indicate to questioning baserunner or #BC. Have a good chuckle with F2 (if PU) regarding F4 announcing the incorrect amount to the entire infield.

Crane head towards the voice of a HBM beyond the fence encouraging her team with "Two outs boys!" (Nope, just one.)

I only announce outs when working solo games for U8-U10. Typically, there's no scoreboard, the kids don't have a clue, and if you don't audibly declare it, you yourself may forget. And you do _not_ want to prolong a U9 Mighty Mites game, lemmetellya.

I not only announce the outs/count/runners to new pitchers, I make sure to take my plate brush out and clean off the pitcher's plate before I go back to the plate. I also make sure to point at the plate when any runner crosses, even though I am telling the defense that the runner touched the plate.

I also set my mask down on the ground or wedge it in the backstop during the plate meeting so I can have my hands free.

I think it's our duty to correct her in this case. In fact, depending on her level of H and the presence or lack thereof of a tank top and short shorts, I may have to go over to the fence and explain to her the proper number of outs and any other matters such that I may have at the time.

yes, Jax, I'm kidding :)

Depends if she's front row in her own personal chair with her feet up on the fence. Safety first guys, you don't want those pretty toenails to get damaged.
