My not athletic enough comment was sarcastic. Sorry if I ruffled your feathers.

If we only had some way of denoting sarcasm...

... you would have used it in your post?

Whatever you do, make sure you pre game this rotation/non-rotation. If we work together, I'm not rotating up.

Not athletic enough to get from PoP to 3B?

Not confident enough as BU to think you can get both calls ?

Agreed. Not thinking rotation when I am on the dish in this situation unless ball leaves the infield....maybe that is old school or whatever but it is what we do around here...h.s. and college....

Good timing insists BU wait for a clean transfer by f3 before making the 1st call. Self-preservation requires not getting hit in the back of the head by a throw from f3 to f5 before the next call. None the less, he's got it all.

BU should ask his higher power for these exciting, challenging plays to happen rather than feel hi and dry.

No, I was just taught differently than some of you.

What is that book from which you copied? I need that, desperately. I'm a rookie and need a ton of work on mechanics of this nature. Thanks.

Before making the call, sure.  But not necessarily before moving for the next call.  It's a "longer" "double play drift".

And, it's better if you don't get sucked in too close to the play at first.

PU has force play slide rule responsibility when U1 releases R1 into 2nd. PU also has all overthrow responsibility. If you are on the third base side of the mound, you will be to far away for that call. BU has to drop back into the working area when R1 is safe at 2nd and be ready to render a call at 3rd if R1 commits.

Sure, it's better not to get sucked in at 1b. But, if you arrive at the ball park at least one hour before the game you will have time to walk the field before you pre-game and get dressed.

I'm in the "Don't rotate if the ball stays on the infield" camp. As PU, I've started going to the first base side of the mound to watch the slide at second base. That way I can then follow the play at first and be responsible for any overthrows at first base. The play on R1 into third base is pretty rare, so I would rather the plate guy help with the possible overthrow at first than be worried about R1 at third.

Had one today that made me think of this thread.  2-man, runner on 2nd.  Bunt up the first base line about 60 feet and ended up having a tag attempt by F3 in front of the base with the BR diving head first into the base.  Then R2 got caught rounding 3rd too hard and they threw him out as he tried to get back.  As PU, do you stay point of plate on this the whole way and make the fair/foul call, or should you come up the 1B line and make the tag call at home from out front if there ends up being a play at home?  Ended up that my partner came almost all the way to 1st base to make the tag call and then was 100 feet away from the play at 3rd.

We don't follow CCA.  Our association explicitly states BU has both calls.

With 2 umpires, you've got to give somewhere.  Either PU is watching for RLI and OI at 2d or he's on the move toward third.  Which scenario is more likely?

I've called a lot more force play slide rule INT calls at 2nd from PU than I've called RLI from PU in my career.  If we are playing the numbers, you'll see me up the 3rd base line just past the cutout of the plate area with my primary focus on the ball.  If SS boots it, then I'm going to move my attention more from 2b to RL...but I'm not going to follow the runner up the 1b line.  I can see it fine 15 feet from the plate towards 3rd.

Working up here in Minnesota, our association only wants the rotation up to 3rd on a clean hit to the outfield. You'll get nailed in any evaluations if you don't.

I personally think you can see the FPSR violations easier from the first base side than from the third base side.  Another reason, in my mind, why I prefer PU to head toward first on this play and leave the second play at third to BU

I agree.  Much easier to see if he is not sliding in a direct line from the 1B side.

In an attempt to summarize this lengthy thread:

(1) CCA, PBUC, and Evans recommend rotating to third in most situations.

(2) Most HS associations recommend heading up first base.

Conclusion:  Do what your assigner wants you to do.

In my association we follow PBUC's 2-man Manual, so I rotate to third.

I just always wonder who has overthrow responsibility at first if the PU is rotating to third and the ball goes into DBT. Is he supposed to get that from half way across the field? Is the BU supposed to have it?

I started going to the first base side to watch the slide at second and it does give you a better look, plus you are in a good place for overthrows.

Did search on this topic as to whether PU rotates to 3rd or NOT and found this old thread. We follow CCA, but based on a couple missed pulled foot calls recently, we are contemplating having BU be responsible for plays at 3rd on R1 when ball doesn't leave infield. To answer the above question, CCA says BU has the overthrow into DBT. As I recall CCA only made this change within the last 5 years of having PU rotate to 3rd on batted balls that remain in the infield. Anyone know what rationale prompted the change. Agree with comments that the most important thing is to cover this in pregame
