OK what am I missing here, whether the pitch hit the ground before it was batted or batted in the air, how does that change the fact that its a caught fly ball/soft line drive and batter is out, and R1 is out on the appeal??

The debate is if the ball hit the ground just after the bat hit the ball.  Was that a caught fly ball or a gloved bounding ball in the infield?

the other option is that the ball hit the bat and then the ground -- which is what the umpires saw.  replay shows them wrong of course, but again I don't think you could tell in real life.
