Agreed. His "read step" was backward to POP and never developed the proper angle. Manager had EVERY right to get upset about that one. Also looks terrible with the long sleeve under armour under the short sleeve shirt.

Johnny pretty well nailed it, but I honestly have to wonder what he WAS actually looking at.  Hey we've all missed em right in our face (and maybe that's just what this is) but that is a HUGE miss.

I can't really see where he is looking in the video so I may be off on it, it's just really bad from how it plays on video.  He could have certainly cheated from POP to 3BLX when it was clear that F5 was bringing it home.  It didn't appear that F5 really had any other play, his momentum would have killed him trying to go to 1st.

Heck... he could have even gotten caught going 1BLX expecting a collision and been fine.anthem fact he got straight lined is unacceptable at that level. Of course saying that, someone is going to point out Welke last year in Colorado.

Why am I not getting the video links in these messages to my iPad? Frustrating!

happening to alot of us. I have to hit the quote button and copy/paste the link to my browser to see videos.

Why the hell is the kid screaming "FOUL"? Don't forget we have this kid in our next game!

In my 2nd year class last week we were talking about when to go to 1bxl or 3bxl and some of the guys couldn't grasp why to go to 3bxl on a play from the left side of the field. I sent the video to the instructors, this makes it pretty obvious. Thanks for this.

No one is going to say anything about the Bu making the fair call when it is suppose to be the Pu call?

I like having the base guys take all fair/foul when there's a potential play at the plate - like this play.

As far as the play at the plate:

Just stay on the catcher's glove arm and he'll take you to the play.

Don't be "that guy" in your class, but your instructors should have you taking all plays from 3BLX.  There's more to it, but starting there is an excellent place to be as you continue learning.

very Iassongna-esque. I dig it!

Advise I have been given is to stay on the left shoulder of F2 at about a 20-30* angle...rotate with the shoulder and it will take you where you need to go. Maybe just a different way of saying what MidAmUmp said...

I heard a similar thing as NWA_UMP at a Billy Hayes / Scott Letendre camp.

Imagine a string from the catcher's left hip to your chest, and stay on it.  The more he turns, the more you turn (as the tag will now likely be on the runner's back) to keep that ideal angle.

And on block plays, many teach 1blx.  Perfect view of the slide, plate, and tag.

Like UMP45 said, start at the point, read the play, adjust.  Most IF throws home with R3 will be block plays.  Most OF throws will be swipe plays.

Well, someone got it right here. When I work three man we even pregame that very situation when the PU is blocked out by a runner coming home and the catcher on the line. That was a good call. And the suggestion about getting closer? What? So it can explode on him like it did. The glove arm is correct. Good call.

Why would you want to take all plays 3BLX?

When I say good call I don't mean the one in the video.

I have said this many times, most calls should be from 3BLE, not all. There are times to go to 1BLE, other times you will rotate around to 1BL or even inside. The only hard and fast rule on plate positioning is there is no hard and fast rule.
