    Balk ruling

Well that is the next step. How this myth got started is beyond me

Sadly yes, any others wish to concur with Jimurray, as a preponderance of evidence to present my not so learned colleagues

    Balk ruling

Sorry if this one has been answered in previous posts Discussion started today that Off. Coach has his choice about which play to accept when pitcher balks. OBR Situation we used as example: R2, R3, Batter has 3-1 count. F1 balks and delivers, ball 4, hits batter (not swinging, so a definite HBP) several of my colleagues say Off. coach has choice, he can accept the HBP and now have bases loaded, or he can take the balk, score R3, move R2 to third and batter stays at bat with 3/1 count. i say Bullflop, since awarding BR first base does not move R2&R3 the requisite 1 base to disregard the balk, you have to enforce it, score R3, move R2 and put batter back in box. what are your thoughts?
  4. Why am I not getting the video links in these messages to my iPad? Frustrating!
  5. Let me preface this by saying here in Wyoming we don't play high school ball, so I have decided to join the ranks of my colleagues in a neighboring state. I just need a bit of clarification on the NFHS dead ball appeal. As I understand it, an appeal can be made on a runner who missed a base or did not tag up, while the ball is 'dead'. Possession of the ball at the point of appeal (base or runner) is not necessary, only a verbal announcement from coach or player, and the umpire renders a decision. Do I have this correct? Thanks
  6. Agreed. This was one of two that I missed. Because of the crappy wording. You would think the NFHS could find some educators out there to help with their test writing. The other question I missed was my own stupid fault.
  7. Good morning, I am considering "upgrading' my current protection from a standard cup to a NB, i notice that the correct and proper fitting requires a compression short. Anyone out there have a preference as to brand; does one brand of short seem to work better with the NB than another?? thanks in advance. ty
  8. Well I will chime in here. Right or wrong, this is my take on the high strike. I believe it is taught to set your eyes at the top end of the zone (different for each batter's height? Rhetorical question.) I for one hate that pitch coming at my eyeballs, so i lock in at the same height and use my chin as the defining line for the topend (on most batters this is belt high) Also using the catcher's position (his shoulder, and head height) and where in relation to this the ball comes in.
  9. Because his first step would have to be towards first base with his free foot (left foot). Yes? The initial start of his windup is a short rocker step with his free foot in the direction of first base. As a baserunner it would be very difficult to ascertain the difference. No?

    Bye

It isn't just at the 10U league. this last weekend tourny with AmLg, 16 - 19 was just as fun. Called a game after time limit, (No new inning after 1 hr and 50 mins, we were 1 hour and 52 mins in when the last out was made in the bttm of 5th., home team losing) had a fan tell me I needed to go learn how to be an umpire. had i been a bit quicker, i would have asked him for the tuition to do so. :)
  11. LMAO, it was great. Because this local manager has been a PITA most of my umpiring career here.
  12. The kid never went to first from this 'position' but if he had i would have balked him. It would truly be helpful if the three codes could at least agree on what is correct foot position for the pitcher's feet. But then again I don't see pigs flying soon. :)
  13. Just had to share this with you all. Early morning game (7:30) last Friday. AmLg tourny. Let me preface by saying that the offensive team in this sitch is from my town (No, there is no conflict of interest) I am PU. Play at first, BU calls F3 off the bag and signals safe. The DC, wants him to get help. (I later find out, this is only to get the OM - 'going') So BU calls me up, I respond: TY "I like pepperoni on my pizza..... Yup he was off the bag, but i really am not sure if he got his foot back before the BR" BU - Nope he didn't. Ok safe. so I turn around, BU says safe. and OC (in 3B box) goes ballistic looking at me, coming across field. "How can you make that call from there, you are twenty feet further away. He had the same angle as you. You guys need to get out of town." My BU and I are just astonished at this, looking at each other with the WTH expression. I finally call time, and loudly tell coach. "Your runner is on the bag, can we just leave it there?" OM's response was a simple "Oh" At the half inning break he comes over and apologizes, I asked him "Hey, who the does not have their head in the game?" This guy made a total jerk out of himself. It was great. :rollinglaugh:
  14. lol, earlier game he and i worked, with me on plate. he was giving me grief because i wasnt hanging out at third. I told him I 'adjudged there would not be a play at first and decided to hang out at the plate." for the play. He 'liked' the word adjudged. ha ha I have noticed this past weekend that the guys that umpire here, me included at times, have darn litle verbal communication. even when this guy as PU was coming up to third I never heard him say anything to that effect. That is going to be my focus this next week, to be more vocal.
  15. I guess another phrase that would fit here is " Pre-game, dumba**" lol
  16. Let me preface this with the phrase "umpire brainfart" 2 man rotation. R1, long fly to left center field, trouble ball as the center fielder is tracking it pretty well however ball is uncaught. goes to fence, R1 is around third and scoring. PU has come up line for R1's advance to third. Who has the plate? My PU says I should rotate from C, after I release R1 to third. My thought was PU should come half way to third take play at plate because i have responsiblilty for BR coming into 2B. What are your thoughts oh sages of mechanics land.
  17. Which also begs the question. If the worst umpire ever is in some other state, than how can it be me? Or follow with the line " I bet you say that to all the guys" ha ha :rollinglaugh:
  18. true, but it would be a hard sell to not call a balk. since the F1's first little rocker step was a backwards motion towards 1B.
  19. Agreed!! Several years ago I was doing a game as PU, and batter hits a flyball straight to center field, F8 turns, tracking ball in a dead sprint. He turned to see where the fence was..... yup it was right in his face. Caught an upright fence pole right across his lip. He hit the fence and immediately dropped to the ground. The BU called time, and we both ran out the to player.

:rollinglaugh: Good job! Trout78. How about the old tune - "Get the Funk outta my face" (don't remember artist),

    Good or Bad?

I am sure someone has consider this and posted about possible music "hooks" we should have recorded and use when a participant disqualifies himself from the game. Here are a couple already mentioned: "Vaya Con dios" "So long, Farewell" or perhaps "Hit the road jack" others? (disclaimer - I mean this all in jest, certainly it would not be 'appropriate' or 'professional' of anyone to actually do this on the field.)
  22. I have even suggested to coaches that they might want to talk to their pitchers, when F1 is showing signs of pain when throwing. This past weekend worked a legion tourny (16-18) coach moved his F2 to F1, didn't even notice that this kid was not even trying to throw out runners advancing from 1B. So the kid gets on the mound and after about 3 pitches I see him wincing. At a break in the action I asked him: TY - how does your arm feel F1 - It's fine Ty - don't lie to me dude, does it hurt like a mofo? F1 - Yeah it is really sore Ty - You know there is no need to blow out your arm at your age, there is nothing wrong with telling your coach you can't go anymore. F1 - (nods his head and starts to consider options) Ty - Surgery at 17 is not necessary. But it is your choice. F1 - I will try a couple more For this kids sake, the def. got him the third out quickly and he was pulled off the hill the next inning.
  23. Have the same thing here in wyo ( oh no it's a virus and it's spreading) I have actually told the ondeck hitters to hang on to the ball when they immediately want to return it to me. An option might be for the ondeck hitter to toss the ball to someone in their dugout, and then at an opportune time get the balls returned to the PU. Easily taken care of at the plate meeting.
  24. I think i would have done the same as you. With an obvious injury to a player, I will lean towards the safety of players every time: with the one caveat of making sure that there is a reasonable moment in the action to call time. Several years ago I was calling a LL minors game, when the RF (kid had a cannon for an arm) threw the ball back in toF4 who was not paying attention - hit him square on the left side of his head/jaw. TIME! Even tho, the off. had a runner rounding 3rd. I think most 'normal' parents will appreciate the fact that you show some 'compassion' towards their players (even if the injured is from the other team) But there are some idiots out there who still have the win at all cost attitudes. Which is really a sad testimony to the current state of society. What was the extent of the players injury in your OP
