In the Sacramento area we have 12 classes Mid-January until Mid-March. You have to attend 10 of those classes, take the NFHS test and pass with 80%, attend one mechanics clinic, and attend at least one scrimmage where you get evaluated. In my first season I got one JV game per assignment sent out (I had 4 JV games last season, so 4 different assignments were sent out during the season). This season (my 2nd) we've had two assignments and I've had two assignments (1 per, both JV). Based on our instructors Varsity get assigned in the 3rd year. Another Association (run by umpires in the HS Assoc) control Babe Ruth/LL/Adult, in which your ranking is used from HS to allow you to self-assign on Arbiter. Last year I was able to work 80+ games and have 10 games so far this season. JV is one man pays $83, Varsity is two man pays $75 per umpire. The other association varies in pay from $50-$75 ranging from one to two man. The HS association has 250+ members, most over 5 years of experience (175 of the members are in level 5 classes, my level 2 is 15 people). Our rankings are not made public, though they are done by our instructors and you get your evaluation written out, you do not get your actual number ranking.

In my 2nd year class last week we were talking about when to go to 1bxl or 3bxl and some of the guys couldn't grasp why to go to 3bxl on a play from the left side of the field. I sent the video to the instructors, this makes it pretty obvious. Thanks for this.

How could he tell? I'm assuming watching you makes it easy. What was the fix? I have a feeling I'm doing something similar.- 30 replies

That's the same price as the Majestic at ump-attire. I'd go with the Majestic. I don't have either, but at a scrimmage on Saturday 2 guys had them, I think the Majestic looks better.

Should get the belt clip for your mask, there would be no problem

Well I didn't buy it, it was given to me so I didn't earn it in anyway. I'm considering wearing it to my first game see how it goes and then maybe sell it. I thought I could get more for it so for the $50 I could get for it I mine as well keep it and enjoy it.

I've decided to take the majority opinion here and have posted it in the Buy and Sell section (http://umpire-empire.com/index.php/topic/25207-fechheimer-navy-plate-coat/) In a couple of years I will get one and wear it until it's 100 degrees just to prove I deserve it :)

A member of my Association was retiring and gave me his old plate coat. After talking to members of this board I thought I should sell it instead of wearing a plate coat my first year. It's a little small on me (I wear a 46R) so I'm guessing it's a 44 or a tailored 46. It is a Navy blue Fechheimer coat and had a number patch on the right arm and a patch on the front chest pocket. Both are not very noticeable, but if you look closely you can see where they were. My picture files are too large so I'm unable to attach any pictures, but have them on flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nickseevers/tags/plate/ I'm going to use the proceeds to buy a long sleeve black shirt and a thermabase black jacket (both XL). So I was hoping to get $120 (you pay shipping) or a trade for the two items listed above (both Black please) If no one is interested I'll put on Ebay in a couple of days.

I'm going to talk to some guys in my Association but I'm probably going to sell it. Anyone want to buy it here? I'm a 44R it's a bit small for me. I can get into it and button one button but no both. My guess is it's a 40 or 42. As I said its Navy. I don't actually know what they sell for so I'll do some research and put it in the Buy thread later today or tomorrow. For giving me insight I'll let you guys PM me if you want it before I try to actually sell it elsewhere. Thanks

I figured it was too small, I'm going to try it with the CP and see if it works. I'm honestly a little intimated of wearing a coat to a game, but we'll see. I know I can get a bit of money out of it, but feel a little guilty selling something I got for free.

I'm a 1st year umpire, our organization is really good and a retiring umpire came in and gave us all his old uniform. I got a few shirts a pair of base shoes and best of all a Fechheimer navy blue plate coat. None of the new guys knew any better and thanks to this fourm I grabbed it. So I have the question, what do I wear under the coat normal umpire shirt? And what color works best under a navy blue coat? Secondly, it is a little small without my CP on is it a huge no-no to wear the coat without buttoning the front? Thanks

Kevin sounds good. But I want to be able to buy it back from you for $14 tomorrow.

It seems like gear goes up pretty high on eBay, but uniform stuff you can get really cheap. I just got a brand new Cliff Keen shirt for $10.
