Lodged in F2's Leg Guard - Batted Ball in foul territory

Umpire-Empire locks topics which have not been active in the last year. The thread you are viewing hasn't been active in 5022 days so you will not be able to post. We do recommend you starting a new topic to find out what's new in the world of umpiring.

R2, R3 2 outs.

Airborne fly ball batted into foul territory behind home plate. F2 slides toward the backstop, the ball tips off of the catcher's mitt and lodges into the top of his shin guard.

F2 pulls the ball out and shows it to the plate umpire. (I saw it happened in a game this year) The ball never touches the ground. The ball lodged between the inside of the shin guard and F2's knee cap.

I have a foul too. OBR definition of a catch:

A CATCH is the act of a fielder in getting secure possession in his hand or glove of a ball in flight and firmly holding it; providing he does not use his cap, protector, pocket or any other part of his uniform in getting possession. (emphasis mine).

Fed is almost idenitcal.

I think what you're asking is about the ball being "lodged."

Were this a thrown or pitched ball, the runners would advance 2bases and 1base, respectively. But since it was a foul, like any other foul in DBT, no runners advance.

Is that what you're after?

No, but we can certainly take the thread in that direction. The brethren have already answered the OP correctly. I will let you know the next time I see a play like this again though.
