  1. Your browser does not support iframes. If F7 flipped the ball to F8 and F8 drops it, would it still be a catch? Obviously doesn't apply in this situation because he caught it but I thought it'd be a good discussion http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/11493214/v497849583/milchc-schwarber-lays-out-to-rob-extra-bases
  2. reading the new issue of Referee magazine, baseball quiz. 5. B1 hits a soft liner to F6 who juggles the ball. The ball eventually ends up inside F6's jersey as B1 holds at 1B. a. B1 is out b. B1 is awarded 1B c. B1 is awarded 2B Answer says "A" for all, citing definition of a catch, and citing 8-3-3c (base awards for a lodged ball) as their rule cites. Why isn't this a lodged ball, with OBR and NCAA awarding 1B, and FED 2B?

  7. I just saw the Josh Hamilton replay ruling from last night's Angels game and don't understand the ruling. I am not an ump, I am a coach, but I thought when a fielder gloves the ball, possesses it, and is attempting to take the ball out of his glove, a catch has been completed. To me, this is clearly what Hamilton did - he caught the ball, turned his glove to his throwing hand as a clear act of starting to removing the ball, then dropped it. The play was originally rule a catch, but then overturned. I believe I have seen similar plays a thousand times at second base with a fielder trying to turn a double play. It has always been ruled an out. Has the rule changed? I would appreciate some expert insight into what I do not understand about the catch rule. Thanks!
  8. This situation was brought up at my High School association rules meeting. FED rules. Outs and count don't really matter, but for argument's sake we'll say it's 1 out and a 1-1 count on the batter. The pitch comes in and the batter squares to bunt. The ball hits the bat and pops up behind home plate. High enough for F2 to have a chance at it, but he doesn't realize this till it's almost too late. He spins and dives for the ball catching it in his outstretched glove. He hits the ground and the glove comes off his hand completely, but the ball remains in the glove. What is your ruling? Out or Foul Ball? and why?

  11. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILDWdTMsan4 If you watched Sports Center's TOP plays today you saw them talk about this amazing game-ending catch by left fielder Derrick Salberg in the NWAACC. Was the final out of the game, so no catch-and-carry ruling need-be applied, but still something to think about as we rarely see it, especially over the homerun fence.
