Yes. it is considered a time play. Run scored before 3rd out was achieved. Would have to wait for an appeal from DC to sort out 2nd question, otherwise ignore.

Also had a game in which this happened. Not as much of a blowout but big enough lead all his batters started to switch hit. They still scored some runs that way as well. Good post Mudisfin.

Had a game that was a blowout (32-3). The winning team's coach told me in between innings that he was going to lead off "big" so that his runners could easily get picked off to quicken the game up. It ended up being 32-3 as a final. Other coach seemed relieved.

You are doing good and with a good question. It is good that you are thinking about what you are doing out there and trying to think of ways to get better. Wish I knew about this forum when I first started out but am glad to know about it now. Alot of new umpires (including myself) did not differentiate between a catch and first touch it was not clearly understood to me (first year) at least and to some of the newer guys that I work with now it is (they think like once I did that ball actually had to be caught). I am still trying to get in proper position so that I can do my job better (work in progress). Keep working and you will get better and keep asking questions. Plate guy should be in proper position as well to see touch by outfielder and tag at 3rd. I am finally getting better at that this season. Always a work in progress for me.

I have coached youth baseball among other sports and now umpire youth baseball up to Varsity level baseball. It is sad and true of your venting. I have never tried to show up an umpire in my 15 years of coaching, but have tried my best to talk with them in a respectful manner. As a coach, if a player showed up an umpire it was an immediate benching and suspension for the next game. As an umpire now, I see some of the parents, coaches and players just go off on us and it is shameful. Starts in the home, but a coach that tolerates or practices horid behavior in front of these young players should be banned from coaching. Can't fix the home as that has been a problem for quite some time.

Agree with everything else said. Sidenote: don't think that your catch call helps the PU. Runners tag up on the touch, not the catch. Your timing should be waiting for voluntary release, at that point the runner may/could be 2-3 steps from their legally retouched base. Like the sidenote, good points

In our association, we work with different guys nearly all the time. Get lucky to work with same guy/gal more than once. So that is why we pregame about 16-20 things (will have to look at my sheet) to include rundowns. Don't think it would hurt to do it pregame, but maybe if you are working with same guys/gals over and over no need to do that. What is the harm in doing it pregame? You nailed the communicate part and splitting of responsibilites as they are vital. Rundowns aren't frequent occurrences and are very seldom ever the same. So spending time pre-gaming what you *think* you're going to do if a rundown were to occur isn't the best use of time. If I was going to pre-game about rundowns it would be this simple - 1 runner: try to box him in, communicate and make eye contact in a gray area. Multiple runners: 1 umpire take the entire rundown. It would take all of 30-45 seconds if that, not all run down situations just what we discussed. That is usually the problem with alot of the veteran guys (knowing it all) us new guys sometimes have to go over stuff in pregame. My pregame with all the topics takes approx 5-10 minutes. Not a waste of time. But thanks for your valued input.

We use this in some leagues I do in the sumer. Last batted out simply means the last guy who made an out at bat. In your example B7 would be the LBO. It's meant to avoid something like this. Speedy leadoff hitter B1 singles. B2 strikes out. B1(R1) CS..(strike em out throw em out). B3 singles, manager wants speedy leadoff hitter to be CR...after all, he was the last out. ...The CR would be B2. The last "batted" out. Not B1 who the actual last out. Richvee, you are correct. I have coached USSSA ball for several years and you explained it the way I remember it. Stopped coaching this last December.

Pregame this with situation such as run downs. Typically what I do is pregame with my partner that before any call is made on a run down that invloves both of us we look at one another and touch our chest to let the other know that we have something or verbalize that we have something. Slow it down a bit. Pregame has helped me with plays like that on more than one occasion.
