Good advice, I am still having trouble with my footwork and positioning on a double play 6-4-3 or 5-4-3. Getting better but still a work in progress. The main problem I have is getting the best angle at 1B for pulled foot and bangers after the call at 2B. I am moving towards 1B after while making the call at 2B but sometimes take the wrong cut and I am too close to base path. Not sure if it where I am starting or like I said wrong steps.

You're making up rules. A ball that goes over, through or under a fence is out of play. Follow the rules for balls that go into DBT. Do you agree that we own the field once we get on it? If so, than the gate being open is on the crew and the batting team gains an unfair advantage by leaving the gate open. Not creating any rules, exercising my judgement. Explain that one to the DC, I guess we would say "sorry coach did not catch that gate being open so batting team gets a run due to my error?" They're the ones that messed up. They overthrew 3B. Pick your analogy: Golf, play it as it lies; Law, you take your victims as you find them. While they may not have been responsible for the playing conditions, they're the conditions at the time. No the crew messed up by not catching the gate being open. We can not just ignore that fact. It is missed sometimes, bat left on field, gate left open... Usually happens on the lower level games and not Varsity but in this case that was presented, if I was UIC on the field that is exactly how I would have handeled it. However, I did ask you guys to rip me apart. Have a good night. Yes, we can. In fact, we have to. There are plenty of times we make mistakes and we have to eat them. This is one of them. We have no legal recourse not to award bases on a ball thrown out of play. You are not ignoring the fact but are acknowledging the error of the crew which is good, so with that argument a crap samich for the crew and follow the rule. I would not, by rule it should happen. Been taught that you look at who gains an advantage on something like this and batting team obviously would. I would talk to the coach and remind him that the gate needs to stay closed and this was discussed at plate meeting. Also been taught that we own the field once we step on to it, so it would have been our job to make sure that it was closed. With all that being said, I stand by nothing to the batting team except a reminder to the head coach and my awareness of the possible problem of the gate being open. Probably wrong, but can't see the DC coach having a problem with it. If the OC does, than the reminder of what was discussed at plate meeting. Rip me apart if you must.

Fixed, yeah, I was alone. I felt horrible, as he probably had the tag but I just couldn't see it. Can't see everything in a 1 man CREW , don't beat yourself up. You got in the best position you could and made the call. Most coaches understand you are giving your best and it sounds like you did with your movement. That is really all you can do, move and work hard and the coaches will most likely give you the benefit of the doubt. Keep working hard as it seems that you are.

One umpire? If so, I think you did all that you could do. I had one similar to your situation last week and went just where you went.

Did not have one like this topic but a few days back runner on 3rd broke for home while the pitcher calmly stepped off and ran at him. Coach was hollering "THAT'S A BALK". They ended up getting the out and coach asked for time to talk with me about it. I told him that pitcher stepped off and what he did was legal. Coach said "well I did not see him step off, are you sure?" I replied "yep" Coaches get caught up in the moment and holler alot times about nothing. Our job to stay calm when emotions run high.

Good stuff, have not run across this yet in a game.

Dennis obvioulsy touched many peoples lives and continues to do so by your post. Sounds like a great guy!!!!

Agree with you guys on this one. I always shake the hand of each F2 and introduce myself. I than tell them in a nice way with a smile "block it up for me, I am an old man" this usually gets a chuckle or a smile back from them followed by "do all that I can blue".

Good question, typically if batter makes an attempt to get out of the way he gets the base. The one that got me talked to by a coach was on a curve ball. The pitcher had a curve ball breaking in hard all night, pretty consistent. Well one did not break as much hit the batter and I gave the batter the base. Coached fussed a bit ("batter did not attempt to get out of the way") and I just called time walked over to the coach and said "that kid has a great curve ball" coach smiled and I went back to the plate. Guess I am saying based on history of that pitch from that pitcher on that day, it was good enough for me to award the base.

Wow, that was a rough one. Way to keep your composure. Good toss though!!!
