  1. It may be nitpicking, and I might not call it in a game I am calling, but this is the big leagues and they call stuff to the letter and are paid quite well to do so. We've all seen a major league umpire call a balk on the tiniest of flinches that we wouldn't call in the vast majority (or even any) of the games that we as amateurs call. I think it was a good call, and I think Maddon was only doing what he does best, namely getting tossed out of a game for arguing a judgement call. 45
  2. Baseball Canada (and Ontario) discourages any sort of "identifying markings" on any of our apparel. Even colored harnesses for masks and colored masks and ball bags are discouraged, but it's not a hard fast rule as some do choose to wear numbers 77
  3. Nothing wrong here IMHO... The second EJ was a good call in my mind as you weren't entirely sure what you heard the first time so you didn't act on it, but were very clear the second time he opened his mouth. 33
  4. My experience is that if I am feeling pain, then it isn't fitted correctly. There will be pressure points, but it shouldn't cause pain. I have the lower straps more snug than the top ones which are borderline loose. I find if the tops straps are too tight it pulls the mask back against my face making it very uncomfotable. 42
  5. For clarification purposes, I did say if a coach or player complained about it, they would be instructed to remove the sleeve (yes, they were compression sleeves), I was only discussing with my partner the fact I only rarely hear anyone complain about it, threw in the rule for discussion purposes. As for the throwing of the bat, to clarify there he said that he would have no problem calling a batter out for throwing his bat anywhere instead of dropping it after he hit the ball. 730
  6. Tonight I was told by my partner at a game "You spend far too much time in that book". He was referring to the official rules of baseball "book" because I had mentioned that there was a pitcher with a sleeve on his pitching arm and not the other and how so few coaches/players complain about it, but if they did we would have to instruct the pitcher to remove it. The same fellow who also said he would call a batter out for interference for throwing his bat.... Methinks maybe he doesn't spend enough time in that book.... 405
  7. I'm 6ft 2 and the delta flex is just too short on the top straps with my west vest platinum. I love the way it hugs the body, but it raises the CP several inches and I've taken 3 shots (one in the liver) just below the CP where the original harness would have saved me those shots. Simple fix is to extend the top straps using the original straps from the CP. Any other tall folks experience this issue? 13
  8. indeed! I feel much better now!! Thank for confrming my good people.

    Enforcement

OBR, R2 0 outs 1 ball 2 strike. F1 in stretch and fails to come to a pause at set, balk called as the pitcher releases the ball and the batter is hit by the pitch (complete with an attempt to move out of the way of the ball). Can we enforce both the balk and HBP in this case? I know that the balk rule states that all runners need to advance at least one base, which doesn't happen in this situation in order to ignore the balk, so that doesn't seem like an option. When the batter is hbp we have a dead ball situation and according to the rules the batter is entitled to first base without liability to be put out, so it seems like this aught to be enforced as well. I'm just trying to make some sense of what to call in this situation. Just the balk, just the hbp or both. Perhaps I am just having a hard time thinking that I should enforce the balk only and basically tell the batter tough luck and the count is now 2-2. 41
  10. I have the F3 HSM, ordered it shortly after it was introduced. I've taken two absolute monster hits directly in the mask and the shock absorbers do their job! While no helmet or mask is going to make it so you don't feel a strong enough hit, this one certainly deadens the energy going into your head. I had a Rawlings HSM previously, and they aren't even in the same category. i't's like comparing a Lada with a Mercedes Benz. More padding, better field of vision and the weight is more evenly distributed across the head because of the more padding. 215
  11. This is seriously a thing in FED?
  12. Speaking as a guy who fancies himself a boot black and general leather care aficionado I tend to be very careful about what I put on my leather pads (or boots or whatever) I love using saddle soap to clean the pads, plus I kinda dig the smell of the stuff so that's all I use. The only other thing I might use is some dubbin which can help make the leather softer and give it a bit of a nice smell. Another good rule of thumb is if it isn't good for your skin, it's not going to be overly good for the leather either.. and stay away from anything that has fats in it (I've seen some leather conditioners with fats in them....) as they will tend to go rancid ans start stinking in short order when combined with the heat and humdity from your face and the weather.
  13. Here in Ontario, each local association belongs to an governing body called Baseball Ontario, and Baseball Ontario sanctions every tournament in the province. When we have an ejection such as yours, post game after a knock out the ejection report is still forwarded to Baseball Ontario who will then enforce the suspension(s) at the next Baseball Ontario sanctioned tournament (aka the next tournament they play in the province). It's nice to know that a coach or player can't just "get away" with some BS after they are all butt hurt from being knocked out. 46
  14. Saw a somewhat scary example of this at a 15U tourney last night night. The batter was crowding the plate and for some reason when the pitch was delivered he decided to crouch down and move his head into pretty much the middle of the strike zone where sure enough he got hit smack in the helmet. PU called the strike and told the batter to stay where he was. Pretty sure the kid got himself a concussion as the next pitch he nailed one out into center and as he was going to first at about half way he slowed down to a stop and stood there with his head hanging before walking off the field.
  15. I maintain, the coaches for the 10 year olds are the worst.... Not usually to this level, but I wasn't surprised of the age division this happened in.
  16. I'm glad someone said it....

    Myth?

So, did some further research, and stand corrected.... Found in a OBR FED rule difference book. Fielders may go into the dugout to make a catch or catch a ball in play and carry it out of play. The ball remains live unless the fielder drops the ball or falls to the ground while in dead ball territory. If the fielder falls or drops the ball while in dead ball territory, runners are awarded one base. OBR 5.10(f) and 7.04(c). If the fielder has not fallen in dead ball territory, then the ball remains live and the fielder may throw from a dead ball territory and complete a play. OBR 5.10(f) Professional Interpretation

    Myth?

2015 OBR page 26/27 Rule 5.06(b)(3)(C) Comment (Rule 7.04(c) Comment): If a fielder, after having made a legal catch, should fall into a stand or among spectators or into the dugout or any other out-of-play area while in possession of the ball after making a legal catch, or fall while in the dugout after making a legal catch, the ball is dead and each runner shall advance one base, without liability to be put out, from his last legally touched base at the time the fielder fell into, or in, such out-of-play area. This is aka "Catch and Carry" Ball is immediately dead, award bases accordingly 76
  19. Only time it ever becomes an issue to me is when I make the correct call which is different than the coaches imagined call and he decides to start beefing over it, at which point I will tell him to knock off his/her theatrics. If the DHC thinks I am making the call the OHC wants, they can come talk to me and I will set them straight, after all I don't think too many of us take very kindly to having our integrity questioned. 66
  20. 3 games in a row all under 1 hour and 25 minutes!  One was a 18 run after 3 inning mercy and the other two were full 7 inning games.

I made up for your quick ones.  5 hours to get two 6 inning games in for the Dizzy Dean 12U State Tournament.  How many pitchers can one use in a 6 inning game?  Holy Cow!

  21. It never ceases to amaze that in a game of well over 100 years (true it has changed a lot over the years but regardless) coaches and players still think that they can find and exploit a loophole in the wording of the rules 96
  22. So occasionally I have this pop up in a game where a coach comes out to the mound and makes a pitcher change, as one pitcher exits and the new pitcher comes in coach always hands off the ball, might say something quick and then exits stage left so to speak. On occassion the coach lingers for more than a few moments to the point I need to break them up to get the game rolling. I've had an opposing coach ask if the other coaches lingering constituted a visit with that pitcher. My answer, which he bought was that since he hadn't left the mound yet it was still charged as a visit to the previous pitcher. All my leagues play OBR. Any input or is this more or less the right way to handle it?
  23. Section 2.0 in OBR has a pretty clear definition..... But why let facts get in the way of a good debate.
  24. They were a hockey team, but would make an incredible ball team name is "The Ninja Sloths". Hamburg Muchdogs is pretty much the most interestingly named team I have called. 46
  25. I find your lack of stopping balls disturbing...... 13
