Obv the high-speed scrubbing in the vid gets blurry (it’s good enough for these purposes)….but that’s a whole lot closer than the blue jersey dudes blew up about. I first thought it was about 1 foot from the bag in real speed - but it’s more like 4 in. from hitting the bag. Close for sure.

Real odd positioning from U1 here. Pretty straight forward play at 1B...Not set, and extremally  nonchalant  for a bang/bang game deciding call. Of course this doesn't excuse the behavior of the players/coaches, but U1 did himself no favors with his mechanics here.

Totally agree, Rich...it looked to me like he took the call over his left shoulder, he was nowhere close to 90 degrees of the throw (I know not everyone subscribes to that angling...) but, worst of all he is moving as the play is being made and moving as he is making the call and made zero effort to sell that call. Then he threw his shoe? Finally, you gotta' get off the field. When the game is over...get...off...the field, brothers.

Looks way too close to the play and it possibly blew up in his face.  And Frank Viola always seems to be a real dick.

90° from a throw from 2nd base is puts you on the 1BL. Just saying.

Agreed. To me it looks like his head is turned, not facing the bag.

And, his head is tilted sideways, too. Anyone who’s ever hit a baseball…..

I'm 100% fine with 2 steps fair, but he's to close, and like we said, not square and not stopped. Real strange look.

Probably a good reason why he's still bouncing around these indy leagues.  Strange similarity to Wally Bachman's managerial career.

I've watched this a few times and it looks as if he's stopped and then moves to avoid possibly getting run over by the runner.  But you know from watching it that the play exploded on him.  Still, the reaction of the teams is way over kill.

It seemed like a bang-bang play that I don't fault him not getting right, but I'm guessing he would have been better with a little more angle (though, he should have been able to see that fine anyway).

The REAL question I have, is why is a field-ump not involved in the controversy taking off his shoe and throwing it? It seems like that ump lost his temper all over the field. 

I understand/support ejecting folks that are that out of hand, but it seems like he's actively screaming at the players.  I suspect he ought to be ashamed of how his actions/response are portrayed on this video...

There’s more to this story. The announcers mention “yesterday”. So there’s carryover here. The umpire loosing his cool (and his shoe) is U3. PU tries to keep players and coaches back as they head to the exit, but U3 is certainly not acting calm and cool. Doesn’t look like U1 even catches up to his crew until they’re at the exit.

I think he threw his shoe because the Rockers player stepped on his shoe.

Any word on the "investigation"?  I've been Googling and am not finding any follow up.

Do we even consider the Atlantic League to be baseball anymore?  I thought it was more of a circus performance.

If you watch that interaction, a player makes a tripping action of that U3, clipping his heel. We see this often in soccer; we’re trained to look for it, and of course, high-level players embellish it to draw more attention to it. 

… Which is exactly what U3 did. He kicked off his own shoe (further) to emphasize that he was intentionally tripped, and that constitutes physical assault. 

Hmm. 🤔 Certain umpires get “better” assignments based on their situation handling, huh? Well… 🤷🏼‍♂️
