how much do you work

This is my fourth season umpiring and I would say I have averaged 3 to 5 games a week from March to November across those four years. Some double headers and an occasional triplet and that is just about as much as I desire to work. Last week I did 5 games, two being a DH and had to travel 50 miles to that one. Barring any rainouts by this weeks end I will have done 7 games in 6 days and to be honest I feel a little tired right now. I know to some of you guys that's nothing, you may double that amount of games regularly. So I was wondering how much you guys like to work each week or season whatever the case may be and what do you call too much ?

I used to work at least a game everyday, at least three doubles a week. I don't work near that much these days. I spend as much observing other guys as actually working.

This is my 9th season umpiring and I umpire 7 days a weeks. Number of games vary due to tournaments on the weekends. The last 5 years I have work just below 500 games, baseball and softball combined at all levels in both sports (High school, summer ball, travel ball and college). Of course I am 23 years old so my boydy can take the wear and tear...for now.I dont think i will be working that many games down the road as I become elogantyly refined in age lol :meditation:

I would say on average, I call around 5 games a week. I could probably work more, but my son plays ball as well so I try and work around his schedule.

I started keeping track in 2009, my first year in high school-level (and third year umpiring):

2009 - 58 games in 4 months; 33 completed.

2010 - 31 games in 3 months; 18 completed.

2011 - 6 games in 1 month; 4 completed.

Due to my work schedule, I can't take nearly as many games now as I could in 2009. I also have a 4-year-old and 18-month-old (started with just a 2-year-old), with a wife that works part-time. Needless to say, family and work are more important than umpiring.

This will be my 7th season umpiring and for softball its kind of hit and miss (because of school, and snow on this end of the state....) but during the early summer months (may-june) I usually do 4-5 a week mostly single games, after june things slow down where I am and I only get one DH every week or so

Almost everyday from the start of the season through the end of May. Mostly college.

About 6 games (in four days) per week through the summer. This is a mix of college and OBR rules, but mostly college players.

Rarely more than two a day (since its not supposed to be allowed in college).

I have yet to get 100 in a year, never mind multi-hundred. This is the 5th year I've been in this association, and you have more games in 2010 and this much of 2011 as I've had in those 5 years.

Since a hockey-induced shoulder injury snuffed out my playing career two years ago, I've flirted with 200 games a season since donning the blue full-time.

Our season starts in late April with high school baseball, which is like glorified house-league up here. HS season ends with the provincial finals in early June, usually held in Toronto at Rogers Centre. Our bread and butter is travel ball, which starts in the first or second week of May and runs until the first week of August. Playoffs then start, with some leagues electing to go for tournament style double knockout formats; others play traditional series (typically best of 3 except the finals - best of 5) during the week and into the weekend. Provincial championships are held Labour Day weekend, except for the ages dealing with university-aged players - they go one week earlier to allow everyone to take off for school. Weekends are dominated by tournaments and elite level college prospect teams playing virtually meaningless doubleheaders to show off their players.

The Ontario college ball season runs in the fall and plays only on weekends. It wraps up usually the weekend before Hallowe'en. At present, there is an unofficial strike against most of the college ball in the province because the assignor is not exactly liked by most. There is a league all star tournament at three age levels - each league in the province selects an all star team (of available players) and sends them to a tournament in mid-September. It's a good way to put a couple of extra bucks in one's pocket before settling in for winter. Additionally, some of the college showcase programs continue their doubleheaders until right around Canadian Thanksgiving (mid October) as a sort of fall-ball program for their teams.

In 09, game 1 was on April 29, game 198 (final game) was on September 20.

Last year, game 1 was on April 24, my steady work ended September 6 at 187 games, plus 4 more when I came home for Thanksgiving in October, for a total of 191.

As you'll see below, I've already been out this year - a pair of double headers at Rogers Centre in Toronto April 3 and 4. High school season starts at home on Monday, but I have to sit out the first few days to finish up my University exams before making the trip back to jump on the field.

I grew up in Hampton Roads and I know it's fairly large and should have quite a few games to offer. is there alot of competition for games there ? To me personally close to 100 games isn't bad.

Semper also does a lot of training for umpires in my league, for free; and he helps me run the umpire program as well. He doesn't count those sessions in his total.

I just went over 100 last year. I was looking at getting close to 200 this year but my new job is very demanding and I've had more turnbacks this year than I've had all other years combined.

Back to the OP I'd like to work 6-7 games a week 2 Sat, 2 Sun and 2-3 weekday ones. I don't like doing more than 2 games in a day.

I'm getting a little picky I guess. I work JC, NAIA, Div. 2 and 3 and high school in the spring.

In the summer, it is mostly 18-under select and I work our local NABA league as well as assigning.

It's too hot here in the summer for me to want to work more.

I am in my 14 th year and have cut back significantly; at my peak about 180, now only about 75-90...

My favorite schedule is 4 weeknight singles and a double...

im in my 6th year , 4th year of serious umpiring . i prefer to work m-thu 1 gm ea day , and 2-3 gms on sat.'s . for 2010 i worked about 90 gm's . this year maybe 100 gms .

I consistenly do 75-80 games a year......I have done more and some seasons less.....I followed my NCAA baseball playing son all over the country to watch him play and i also have a JOB........but I have a yearly goal to do better baseball and not just MORE baseball......

Some of you guys have it made! I guess I need to start looking for a new place as our season is so short and there are too many umps I am lucky to get 20 games. Some weeks I'm not even scheduled. My fault partially as I like to let the kids who need the money get a game over me, an adult doing it for fun. I noticed last year I wouldn't be scheduled yet I'd get called a couple times a week at the the last minute as I live just across the street from the park. It felt like they were just assuming I'd get games this way. Had to tell them I don't mind filling in, but would like to see my name on the regular schedule as well. I really hate to find a new league because I don't know that I want to drive all over for a game, but there has to be something better. (I think this year may be a little better as they had a lot of umps drop out.)

Just finished my 10th in 7 days mostly college with a few HS games sprinkled in. Love it, but I love my massage therapist even more this time of year. Great way to get energy back in your legs. I highly recommend it.

Just finished my last HS game of the season. Worked 28 of them. It's my first year working HS ball so I do not qualify for Districts games which are starting now.

So on to Rec Ball and Travel Ball, etc.

I worked about 250 games last year. Probably won't come anywhere close to that this year just because I switched associations.
