little league umpires do it.

Not all umpires who work Little League (tm) are little league umpires.  Some little league umpires work other than Little League (tm)

I've been to Little League Central Region's umpire school twice and we were instructed (both times, if I recall correctly) not to brief the pitcher.

I don't do it, but I'm not going to give a partner (or a rec league) a hard time about doing it. It's just not important.

It's important as to how your crew is percieved.

Why is the BU anywhere near the mound? Should be back on the dirt/grass line, giving the pitcher his space to warm up. After he is done, slide up into B or C and go to work.

Yeah, but my partners that do this will still be giving me signals that they expect me to go tell him. I just wondered what you do mid-game when the guy does this.

I disagree, at least in the leagues I work. Unfortunately, many of my partners have much worse habits, ones which really affect the quality of the game they call. Folks where you work may be discerning.

Are your partners or group not amenable to your input as to their bad habits or smitty like practices. When you don't brief the pitcher do they ask why?

Cover it in pre-game, that the coaches and pitchers are big boys and they should know the situation. If they think I should do it, then I tell him that we don't tell every PR the situation, what makes the pitcher any more important :) .

If I work with a partner that tells me (not ask me) to count the pitches, if he is doing line-up card - I tell him I will count from the dirt, to give the pitcher his space and let the PU know how many LEFT. I will then just go to my position when the new pitcher is ready.

No, unfortunately, most of my partners are not open to suggestions, comments or input, so I no longer bother. It's hard even getting guys to do a pre- and post-game, and, again unfortunately, there is little sense of proper teamwork. What is the phrase? They have been umpiring for one year, twenty times.

Below HS and Legion, there is not much professionalism in the umpiring world of my little corner of PA.

Based on a thread on another board, even in HS, there might not be some adaquate knowledge of the rules.

I don't insist that my partners do it, but I won't do it myself and I won't stop you from doing it.

If a base umpire does that in a game where I'm the plate umpire, I'm  going to call him over between innings and tell him, "if you want to look a t-ball umpire when you're on the plate, fine.  But if you do it again this game I'm going to kick you're a$$.  Leave my pitcher the f--k alone."  (Or words to those effect.)

To paraphrase, the PU owns the pitcher.

And U-E is where I 'un-learned' it!

I've un-learned *so* many bad habits from this site. (Yes, including this one)

How did you learn the bad habit in the first place? Did you just assume that was how it was done because you saw it done or did someone actually teach it that way?

I had people teach me.

So now I'm working on un-teaching many colleagues as well.

Actually, let me revise...

*Some* things I had been taught (e.g., apprising a new pitcher, and using a plate brush to sweep off the pitching rubber). Some things were things I had seen while playing and/or coaching (e.g. fists together while announcing "full count").

Thanks guys. Most of the partners that do this are older guys, so I'm sure I can handle them in a fight :)

Here are two ways to look at this – and other quirky, superfluous umpire activities / embellishments.

The first, apply this question: Would the game be able to proceed just fine if I (as umpire) didn't do it? Is that guy safe or out? Is that ball fair or foul? Can't really keep playing unless we know the ruling or judgement. Can this kid pitch without being told how many runners are on? I'm pretty sure he can...

The second, consider this principle: The less we are involved (or involve ourselves) in the events of a game, the more efficient and effective we are. By all means, engage in and be focused on the game at hand, but there isn't a need to involve yourself beyond what is minimally necessary.

You're being paid X dollars to work this game, no more, no less, and you're certainly not being paid per pitch/out/inning/call. If you're paid before the game starts, why would you feel the need to prolong the game with additional delays (calling and granting Time unnecessarily, for example) and embellishments? If you're paid at the end, like at a tournament, then adopt what a mentor of mine told me– "The check's already been written, now hustle your ass to go get it."

Understandably, this principle is foreign to volunteer umpires... which is why some LL umpires let this befall them. Because they are not being paid, recognition becomes the reward, and they feel they have to impress someone or get someone's notice. You'll also see guys like this linger around for handshakes and high-fives.

Maximize the value of your pay by minimizing the amount of effort you needlessly put in.

"Okay, pitch - here's the situation...

You have this white, round thing, and you throw it to that guy squatting down there [points].  That guy [points] will try to hit it with that stick.  If he does, there's a lot of running around and shouting.  Then another guy will show up with a stick, and you do it some more.  At some point, all of that will stop, and you'll go to that shack over there [points].

Go get 'em, tiger."

...... too much?  not detailed enough?

You're not going to review which rule set you're playing under with him? Setting him up for failure, man.
