For my fellow veterans.  Wanting to know if you are offended by the National Anthem Standoff?  I personally am not offended and like the fun that the kids are having.  I am more offendded by the people who have never served claiming it is disrespectful to us veterans.  I have yet to meet a veteran who is offended.  Just don't get it.

Jim Paronto who is the rule interpreter for the NCAA has a son who was involved in Banghazi.

If he's offended by the National Anthem Standoff...then I am as well.

I am not a veteran, will never be a veteran, therefore I defer judgment on what any veteran thinks about the National Anthem standoff.

I don't get the standoff taking place on a baseball field. To parlay the salute tomourvcountry into who has more gannas in a ball game is juvenile. Incredible that it took place in a pro game. If they want to stand in line after the anthem there should be a recruiter waiting to sign them up at the end of the line. If they want to stand off go to a veterans cemetery and line up there.

Veteran or not, I'm an American.  Therefore, any act that misuses or gratuitously rides the coat tails of our national anthem is offensive to me.  To speak directly to the stupid standoff, the fact that it not only misuses the anthem for its purpose, but does so during a baseball game, is piling one objectionable stunt on top of another.  It shouldn't be expecting too much of American baseball players (or players playing baseball in America) to respect both and act accordingly.  If as a player, fan or umpire you need some additional form of entertainment during a ball game than the game itself, find another past time and let the rest of us enjoy it.

Please tell me what is disrespectful.  I did a 20 year career in the Navy and don't find it at all disrespectful.  What I find disrespectful is ladies wearing their hats during the anthem.  Don't get that double standard.

I'm a big fan of Jim Paronto, but just because he is offended means you're offended?  What was his son involvement in Banghazi?  I hadn't heard anything about that.

I thought I explained it by saying it's offensive to me because the standoff misuses the anthem for its own gratuitous purpose.  I am grateful for your commitment to the Navy and the nation, and that can stand on its own merits, irrespective of this standoff thing.  So I'd prefer to address the standoff without the context of anyone's military status.

Noted.  In Las Vegas and was served a free dinner at South Point Casino.  Thank you for the acknowledgement.  I guess I won't get it.

I think Thunderheads nailed it.

It's disrespectful to all of the people who came to watch, officiate, facilitate, or play in a baseball game, not the country or specifically its veterans.

My thoughts exactly.

I'm a vet and not offended as well.  In all actuality, the anthem is over and they are just standing on the line.  I personally like @MajorDave 's approach to handling the situation.

@RingEmUp

Which method?

The stupid one that will get you sued by letting the idiots stand on the foul line while you point and say "play" then hope a screaming line drive scares them back into the dugout?

OR

The Eject! Eject! Eject! method that includes at least two players and a coach per offending team?

I recommend Eject! Eject! Eject!  A little more paperwork upfront but a lot less effin lawyers.  Just sayin. (Speaking as an effin lawyer, hahaha-hate those guys and girls.  I really do.)

I'm offended they are interfereing with the playing of a baseball game by playing some other childish game.

I'm not offended, I just think it's idiocy.

Both methods work for me.

But are you offended?  I know the college procedure of eject.

I'm not offended.  Personally, I think the way this should be handled is by just using the clock.  They've got one minute from the end of the anthem to warm up.  After one minute, start calling balls.  If the defense is ready but the offense isn't, then start calling strikes.  They may want to have their fun, but not at the expense of delaying the game.

I don't care about the alleged disrespect of the National Flag or National Anthem. The basic tenet of our freedom is that you are free to do what you like so long as you aren't hurting anyone else or infringing upon their rights. Jerks standing and staring isn't infringing on a right.

But, I am offended when they openly defy my authority as the plate umpire to start and umpire the game I was hired to work. So, my ire isn't that they are disrespectful of our country. My disapproval and resulting enforcement action is directly related to their challenge of my authority.

Exactly. I don't understand the whole "this is offensive to our country/flag/anthem", but I'm certainly not letting them pull this when there is a ballgame to be played and it's my job to make sure that the game does get played in a timely manner.

Just have the other players pick them up and place them in the dugout.  The only way this would offend me is the same reason MajorDave says, and that is it delays my game or questions my authority.

The Flag Code only asks that men remove their hats.

http://www.usflag.org/uscode36.html

And there's a lot of other things folks do that violate the code without objection.

I know what the code says.  I just think since we live in a world where women can serve on submarines, etc. then they can remove their hats.  Equal rights type of thing.
